Wilmington, NC – Junior
Rokas Gustys had 15 points and 16 rebounds for his 30th career double-double (seventh this season) but it wasn't enough as UNCW had just enough to defeat the Hofstra Men's Basketball team, 84-76, on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 9-10 overall and 1-5 in league play. It was Hofstra's fifth straight defeat. UNCW improved to 17-2 and 6-0 in league action.
Senior
Deron Powers led Hofstra in scoring with 20 points and added eight assists in the contest. Also in double figures was sophomore
Justin Wright-Foreman with 13 and senior
Brian Bernardi with 12.
An entertaining first 20 minutes would see the two squads combine for 82 points as the Seahawks took a narrow 42-40 lead into the break.
Hofstra jumped ahead early on, leading 12-4, just over three minutes into the contest as Powers had five points.
An old-fashioned three-point play from Powers with 8:49 left in the half had Hofstra still ahead 27-20 before UNCW gradually chipped away and used an extended 14-7 run over the next nearly five minutes to even the score at 34 with exactly four minutes remaining.
The teams would exchange baskets most the rest of the half with two straight buckets from junior
Hunter Sabety giving Hofstra a one-point lead in the final minute before Denzel Ingram drained a three-pointer with four seconds left to account for the halftime score.
Neither team could take much of a lead in the second stanza until UNCW was able to turn a two-point lead, 59-57, into a 10-point advantage with eight straight points. The Seahawks would lead 67-57 with 7:08 left in regulation following two free throws from Ingram.
UNCW would push the lead to as many as 12 in the second half and would still lead 75-65 with exactly four minutes left before Hofstra began to battle back. A layup from Wright-Foreman would start a 7-0 scoring run for Hofstra that closed the gap to 75-72 following another Wright-Foreman basket with 1:13 remaining.
With the momentum clearly on the Pride's side, C.J. Bryce would come up huge for the Seahawks as he drained a clutch three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to seal the victory for UNCW.
Hofstra out-rebounded the Seahawks, 42-37, in the game.
Ingram had 20 points for UNCW, while Chris Flemmings posted 19 points, Bryce had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Ambrose Mosley chipped in with 12.
Today's game concluded a three-game road trip for Hofstra, which will return home on Thursday to host Towson at 7 p.m. The Pride will also host Northeastern on Saturday at 4 p.m.
