MBB: Pemberton Scores 26 For Hofstra In Loss To Towson

Hempstead, NY - Freshman Eli Pemberton had a season-high 26 points but Towson rallied in the second half to post an 86-80 Colonial Athletic Association win over Hofstra Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Tigers erased a 16-point first half deficit, outscoring the Pride, 54-40, in the second half.

Pemberton eclipsed his previous high of 23 points, shooting 10-17 from the floor including 5-8 from three-point range. He also added five rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of action. Senior Deron Powers added 19 points and six assists, while sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman notched 18 points and four rebounds. Junior Rokas Gustys had eight points and eight rebounds.

Hofstra fell to 9-11 overall with its sixth consecutive loss and is now 1-6 in CAA play. Towson won for the third straight game and improved to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the league.

The Pride jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first 2:20, scoring five points from the free throw line. But Towson responded with a 6-2 run to get within one, 9-8, with 15:08 remaining in the first. After Towson tied the score at 11, Powers scored three straight points for the Pride (all from the free throw line) for a 14-11 lead with 12:51 to go. Hofstra would extend the lead to 20-11 following two baskets from Wright-Foreman sandwiched around two more free throws from Powers. Towson ended the Hofstra run with a pair of free throws, but the Pride started a new run as Pemberton drained a three-pointer and Wright-Foreman a jumper for a 25-13 lead with 9:22 left in the opening half.  The Pride built the lead to as many as 16, 32-16, with 6:46 to play before Towson went on a 13-0 run to get within three, 32-29 with 3:07 to go. Pemberton quelled the rally with a three-pointer from the corner and ignited a 7-0 run for the Pride that pushed the lead back to 10, 39-29, with 1:24 to go. Hofstra would go into the half with a 40-32 advantage.

Both teams started the second half slowly on the offensive end as the teams combined for 10 points in the first 4:05 with the Pride maintaining a 44-38 lead. Things picked up after that though as the Tigers used a 9-3 run over the next 2:30 to tie the score at 47 on a three-point play from Jordan McNeill with 13:41 to play. Wright-Foreman snapped the tie with a three-pointer to give the Pride a 50-47 lead with 13:11 to go but Towson ran off 10 straight points to take a 57-50 lead with 10:57 to go on Deshaun Morman's three-pointer. The lead would grow to 11, 66-55, with 8:37 remaining on another three-pointer from McNeil. Hofstra responded with an 11-2 run over the next 3:52 to get within two on a Powers layup with 4:49 to play. After trading baskets, Hofstra scored five straight points to take a 73-72 lead with 2:59 on the clock following an offensive rebound and put back from Pemberton. Towson retook the lead on a pair of John Davis free throws and then extended to a 76-73 lead on two free throws from Arnaud William Adala Moto. After Towson went up by five, 80-75, Pemberton drained a three-ball to make it a two-point game with 49 seconds to play.But the Tigers hit all six of their free throws in the final 33 seconds to hold Hofstra off. 

Zane Martin led five Tigers in double-figures with a career-high 23 points off the bench, while Adala Moto, Morman and Davis had 14 points each and McNeill added 13.
