WBB: Second-Half Push Lifts Hofstra Over Towson

Towson, Md. – Four players finished in double figures for Hofstra Women's Basketball as the Pride took a 70-61 win over Towson Friday night at SECU Arena to earn its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season.

The Pride (8-6, 1-2 CAA) outscored the Tigers 26-15 in the third quarter and 22-19 in the fourth to snag the win. Senior Krystal Luciano led Hofstra with 19 points, while chipping in six assists. Junior Ashunae Durant picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Aleana Leon recorded 13 points and freshman Ana Hernandez Gil put up 10. Senior Sandra Dongmo pulled down 11 rebounds and posted eight points.

Raven Bankston led the Tigers (8-7, 1-3 CAA) with 14 points while Raine Bankston contributed 11.

Towson opened the game with a pair of three-pointers to stake an early 6-2 lead. Leon scored seven of the Pride's first eight points, including a trey midway through the first quarter to cut Hofstra's deficit to 12-8. An easy layup for Durant brought the Pride within two and freshman Marianne Kalin knotted the score at 12 with 3:22 left in the first. A three from Raine Bankston gave Towson the lead back.

Dongmo put up the first points of the second quarter, bring the Pride back even, but the Tigers quickly answered back on the next possession. Etalyia Vogt snapped a scoreless drought for both teams to give Towson a 19-15 lead, but paint points for Dongmo and a fast-break layup from Luciano knotted it at 19. The Tigers closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 27-22 advantage into halftime.

Durant made a pair of free throws to open the second half, but Raven Bankston responded by knocking down both of her foul shots at the other end. Luciano then drained a pair of threes to give Hofstra a 32-31 lead with about seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Pride quickly pushed the lead to seven with a put-back from Dongmo, a transition layup from Leon, and a layup from Kalin. After Towson had pulled back within four, Luciano made a pair of free throws, but Raine Bankston knocked down a trey to make it a two-point game. Freshman Ana Hernandez Gil hit a pair of threes and made a fast-break layup for a 48-42 Hofstra advantage at the end of the frame.

The Tigers clawed back early in the fourth, with Mary Cuevas making a layup and drawing a foul, completing the three-point play for a 51-50 Towson lead. Vogt made a long-range jumper moments later to push the lead to 55-52, but Kalin's layup cut the deficit back to one. With the shot clock running down, Luciano made a three to knot it at 57. She then knocked down another out of a timeout for a 60-57 advantage with under four minutes to go. Durant helped push the lead back to five, but a Maia Lee layup brought the Tigers back within three. Towson turned to fouling in the final moments of the game, helping Hofstra to the 70-61 victory.
