WBB: Hofstra Falls At Home To Delaware

Hempstead, NY - Delaware used a 17-2 run to close the third quarter and start the fourth to rally past Hofstra, 73-56, Sunday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Ashunae Durant had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Pride.

Hofstra, which also got 14 points and seven assists from Krystal Luciano, fell to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. Delaware snapped a two-game losing streak and evened its record at 8-8 overall, 2-3 in CAA play.  

Delaware scored the first eight points of the game, holding the Pride scoreless for the first 4:04. But Hofstra closed the quarter on a 19-8 run to take a 19-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Luciano gave the Pride a 16-15 lead with a three pointer with 53 seconds left and after Delaware tied the score with a free throw, Olivia Askin drained a three of her own with 10 ticks left for the three-point advantage.
 
The Blue Hens rallied in the second quarter, holding the Pride scoreless for more than five minutes during a 7-0 run that tied the score at 29 with 2:51 to go on a jumper from Nicole Enabosi. But Durant stopped the drought with a driving layup and added a jumper with 12 seconds left to give Hofstra a 33-29 lead at halftime.
 
Hofstra maintained the lead throughout the third quarter, extending to a six-point advantage (43-37) on a fast break layup from Aleana Leon midway through the stanza. Delaware would cut the deficit to two following four straight points, but Marianne Kalin's two free throws pushed the lead back to four with 3:05 to go on the quarter. But the Blue Hens responded with five straight points to take a 46-45 lead on a three-point play from Makeda Nicholas with 1:57 to play. A three-pointer from Abby Gonzalez pushed the lead to four, 49-45, before Leon's basket cut the Pride's deficit to two. But a three-point play and two free throws from Enabosi gave Delaware a 54-47 lead going into the fourth quarter.
 
Delaware built the lead to 14 points, 63-49, with 6:30 to play in the fourth quarter. Luciano got the Pride within 11 with a three-pointer with 6:18 to go. But Hofstra would not get closer than that the rest of the way. The Blue Hens outscored the Pride, 19-9, in the fourth quarter.
 
Enabosi led three Blue Hens in double figures with a career-high 24 points. The sophomore forward also added 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year. Nicholas chipped in with 19 points, also a career-high, while Erica Brown had 10 points and six assists.   
 
Hofstra will return to action Friday when it hosts UNCW in a noon tip on What I Want To Be Day at the Mack Sports Complex. Several elementary schools from the area will be in attendance, learning about a variety of jobs and careers during a pregame presentation.
 
Notes:
-Durant's double-double was her 10th of the season, matching her total from 2015-16
-Delaware controlled the boards, holding a 45-29 rebounding advantage.
-The Blue Hens had 18 second chance points, compared to one for the Pride.
