The Pride went 1-0-1 in the Army West Point Invitational to improve to 4-1-1 overall. On Friday, senior Jill Mulholland scored Hofstra's only goal as the Pride played to a 1-1 draw with a tough DePaul side. Mulholland and junior Kristin Desmond each finished with two goals and an assist on Sunday, with Hofstra taking a dominant 5-2 win over UNC Greensboro. Junior Noriana Radwan also found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
After scoring three times last weekend, Mulholland now has six goals in the Pride's first six games and has moved into the top 10 in program history in career goals, with her 23 tallies ranking ninth. With six goals and two assists, she is just a goal and assist away from matching her points total from the 2015 season.
In addition, Hofstra once again got strong performances from its backline and goaltenders last weekend. Redshirt-sophomore Ashley Wilson and senior Friederike Mehring have continued to split time in net. Wilson saved a penalty kick in Friday night's contest against DePaul and finished with four saves in the first half before adding three more stops in the opening frame of the win over UNC Greensboro. Mehring also made four saves against DePaul, staying in net for the two overtime periods. Both keepers have a save percentage better than .800.
Army West Point enters the weekend winless with an 0-6 record. The Black Knights have scored just one goal, against UNC Greensboro on Friday, getting shutout by Albany, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Harvard and DePaul. But the losses to the Pirates, Orange and Crimson were each just one-goal margins. Clare Shea has the team's lone goal of the season. In net, Jordan Cassalia has made 29 saves through the team's first six games. The Black Knights finished the 2015 season 4-12-2 and are predicted to finish sixth in the Patriot League in 2016 according to the conference's preseason poll.
Hofstra and Army West Point have met just twice before, with the Black Knights holding a narrow 1-0-1 edge in the all-time series, which hasn't seen the programs meet since 2004.
The Pride will stay at home for a midweek matchup with Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
