Cambridge, Mass. – Hofstra men's soccer outshot Harvard, 20-9, but the teams played to a scoreless draw in a defensive battle Sunday afternoon at Ohiri Field.
In a first half that saw each team register just one shot on goal, sophomore goalkeeper
Leonard Arkhanhelskyi made a diving save on Harvard's dangerous strike from Sam Brown in the 11th minute.
The Pride (1-2-1) had three quality chances to open the second half, beginning with
Danny Elliott's strong individual effort working his way up the line and past the Harvard defender, but his shot sailed wide. Freshman
Adam Savill then put a blast on net that had to be turned away by Crimson goalkeeper Kyle Parks. Then a moment later, junior
Meshack Eshun Addy flicked a header towards goal, but Parks was there again.
Freshman
Luke Brown had a look on net after Hofstra kept possession after a corner kick, as he tried to tuck a shot inside the left post, but it missed just wide. Brown and senior
Nino Alfonso combined for an opportunity a moment later, but Parks came off his line to smother the ball from Alfonso.
Hofstra was awarded a free kick in favorable position in the first overtime, but senior
Joseph Holland's low shot was collected by Parks.
Harvard (1-0-1) had a chance midway through the second overtime with a wide open look at net, but the chance went wide with the offside flag raised.
Elliott broke free in the waning moments of the second overtime and fired a point blank shot, but Parks was there once again to keep the game scoreless.
Arkhanhelskyi made three saves in his first career shutout as the Hofstra backline successfully shut down the Crimson attack.
Hofstra opens its home schedule at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday against Army West Point as part of a doubleheader with the Pride women's soccer team.
