MSOC: Hofstra Blanks Army West Point In Home Opener

Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior Danny Elliott's goal in the 68th minute was the difference-maker as Hofstra men's soccer shut out Army West Point, 1-0, in the Pride's home opener Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride held a special 9/11 tribute ceremony prior to the game, with Hofstra men's soccer Head Coach Richard Nuttall and Hofstra women's soccer Head Coach Simon Riddiough presenting the family of Frederick T. Varacchi, a Hofstra alum who was killed in 9/11, with a ceremonial ball. The Frederick T. Varacchi Memorial Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a Hofstra student-athlete each year.

The Pride (2-2-1) dramatically outshot the Black Knights, 17-3, with Elliott and senior Joseph Holland leading the way with four shots each.

Hofstra had a number of good looks on net in the first half, with Elliott getting an early chance from out wide and Holland hitting the crossbar on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, but the sides entered halftime scoreless.

Freshman Luke Brown had a quality chance on net in the opening moments of the second half before he combined with Elliott and fellow freshman Oscar Ramsay in an impressive passing play inside the box, but Ramsay couldn't get his shot away.

Elliott broke the Pride's scoreless drought of more than three and a half games in the 68th minute, corralling a pass from Holland and firing over the hands of Army West Point goalkeeper Christian Nolasco for Elliott's first goal of the season and Holland's first assist. Holland leads the Pride with five points.

Nolasco made five saves for the Black Knights (1-3), while the Hofstra backline helped keep Pride goalie Leonard Arkhanhelskyi's day quiet, as he needed to make just one save in his second straight clean sheet.

Hofstra continues its difficult non-conference schedule on Tuesday, heading to No. 6 Syracuse for a 7 p.m. matchup.
