FH: Hofstra Outscores Fairfield For Its Fifth Consecutive Victory

Hempstead, NY – Senior Stella Schoen tallied two goals and one assist and classmate Carissa Witmer added a goal and an assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to their fifth consecutive victory with a 6-5 non-conference victory over the Fairfield Stags at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.

Hofstra improved to 7-4 on the season with their fifth consecutive victory while the Stags, who dropped their seventh straight game, fall to 1-9 on the year.

Schoen, who moved into sixth place on the Hofstra career points chart with 110 with her five-point day, passed Charlia Warner (105 from 2005-08) and Edith Gallagher (106 from 1986-1989) to move into the sixth spot. She now has 42 goals and 26 assists in 63 games during her career. Witmer, a backliner, continued her excellent play on penalty corners, scoring and assisting off the set pieces.

The Pride got on the board just 4:49 into the game as graduate-student Marloes Schavemaker picked up a rebound and beat Fairfield goalie Caitlin Bennett for a 1-0 lead. It was Schavemaker's first Hofstra goal. Fairfield tied the game at the 10:43 mark when Maclaine Matties sent a long shot into the circle that was deflected by Ann Burgoyne over Pride senior starting goalie Lauren Saltus.

Hofstra sophomore Madison Reed tallied her first goal of the year at the 14:11 mark on a deflection of a Schoen shot for a 2-1 lead.  Just 2:10 later, Witmer scored off the penalty corner, with seniors Emily Gallagher and Colby Hussong assisting on Witmer's fourth goal of the year.

Fairfield closed the gap to 3-2 on an Erin Buckley penalty stroke at the 26:31 mark. It was Buckley's second goal of the year. But Hofstra senior Claudia Marin Samper answered a little more than a minute later on a deflection of Witmer's shot following a penalty corner. It was Marin Samper's 11th goal of the year and gave the Pride a 4-2 advantage. It was also Marin Samper's 49th career goal moving her into third place on the Hofstra career goals chart, passing Jonel Boileau (48 from 2011-14) and Jamie Knoblich (48 from 1994-97).

The Stags closed the gap to 4-3 just 38 seconds before halftime as Julie de Paeuw scored on a deflection of a Matties shot. The shots were even in the first 35 minutes at 7-7 while the Pride held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Hofstra boosted the lead to 5-3 at the 44:52 mark as sophomore Madison Sauve made a charge to the goal and then passed the ball back to Schoen in the center of the circle for a high shot that beat Bennett. Fairfield, once again, closed the gap to one in the 50th minute as de Paeuw notched her second of the game and third of the season off the penalty corner with Jaclyn Gallagher and Kaley McMullen assisting.

Schoen gave the Pride some much needed breathing room at the 60:30 mark, picking up a rebound off the goalie's pads and scoring her ninth goal of the year to boost the Hofstra lead to 6-4. It would be a key goal as Fairfield would close to within one again in the 66th minute when Maddie Haberl deflected a Matties shot past Hofstra junior goalie Carys Swan, who replaced Saltus at halftime and made four saves.

Hofstra outshot Fairfield, 16-14 and held a 7-5 penalty corner advantage. Saltus, who did not make a save in her 35 minutes of work, recorded her sixth win of the year against one defeat.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, October 2 when Hofstra travels to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut to face the Bobcats of Quinnipiac at Johnson Field. Game time is 3 p.m.
