Hempstead, NY – Freshman
Lara Bittel's penalty stroke goal in the first half gave the Pride a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish as Hofstra recorded its sixth consecutive victory with a 3-2 win over the Bobcats of Quinnipiac University at Yale's Johnson Field Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra improves to 8-4 on the season as the Pride head into the Colonial Athletic Association schedule next weekend. Quinnipiac falls to 2-9 on the year.
The Bobcats opened the scoring at the 14:10 mark off a penalty corner, as Savanna Reilly scored her seventh of the season from Dayna Barlow for a 1-0 lead.
Hofstra sophomore
Madison Reed tied the score at the 20:55 mark, also off a corner, off a pass from classmate
Samantha Schlegel. Less than three minutes later, the Bobcats were called for a foul in the circle and Bittel converted the penalty stroke for her third goal of the season that gave the Pride a 2-1 lead at the break. Hofstra outshot the Bobcats, 11-2 and had three penalty corners to Quinnipiac's one in the first half.
Pride senior
Claudia Marin Samper gave Hofstra a little cushion at the 54:19 mark, taking a centering pass from
Madison Sauve and beating Bobcats goalie Olivia Golini (2 saves). It was Marin Samper's 12th goal of the year and 50th of her career. She is just the third player in Hofstra history to tally 50 goals in her career.
Quinnipiac closed the deficit to 3-2 in the 60th minute as Lily Shemo passed to Dayna Barlow for her third goal of the season. But the Pride defense clamped down and held on to the lead for their sixth consecutive win as they head into the CAA season with a big head of steam. Hofstra senior goalie
Lauren Saltus made two saves in the contest to record her seventh win in eight decisions.
Hofstra returns to action next Friday, October 7 when they travel south to face the Towson Tigers in the Pride's CAA opener at 6 p.m.
