FH: Hofstra Runs By St. Francis For Fourth Consecutive Victory

Piscataway, NJ – Senior Stella Schoen scored with 27 seconds to play in the first half to break a 1-1 deadlock and lead the Hofstra Pride to a 3-2 non-conference victory over the Red Flash of St. Francis at the Bauer Track and Field/Field Hockey Complex at Rutgers University Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which recorded its fourth consecutive victory, improves to 6-4 on the season. St. Francis which dropped its second consecutive game, slips to 6-4.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in Hempstead but had to be moved to accommodate Monday's Presidential Debate on the Hofstra campus.

Despite the close 3-2 score, the Pride dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Red Flash, 28-4 and taking 10 penalty corners to one for St. Francis. Hofstra goalie Lauren Saltus did not have to make a save to record her fifth victory of the year.

Hofstra senior Claudia Marin Samper opened the scoring just 8:34 into the first half, picking up a turnover in front and slipping it past Red Flash goalie Elizabeth Dyer (9 saves) for her 10th goal of the season. But St. Francis tied the game at the 12:02 mark when Brea Seabrook tipped in a shot by Shannon Pereira for her fifth goal of the year.

Schoen broke the tie late in the half, tipping in a shot by Colby Hussong at mid-circle for her seventh goal of the year and a 2-1 lead at halftime. The Pride outshot St. Francis, 13-2 in the first half.

Senior co-captain Emily Gallagher boosted the Hofstra lead to 3-1 at the 54:48 mark on a bullet that went into the lower left corner for her fourth goal of the year.

St. Francis closed to within one a little too late when Hannah Retherford converted a pass from Shannon Pereira for her fifth goal of the season with just 45 seconds to play in the contest. Hofstra outshot the Red Flash, 15-2 in the second half and had six penalty corners compared to none for the Red Flash.

Hofstra will return to action on Friday, September 30 when the Pride host the Stags of Fairfield University at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium at 3 p.m.
