VB: Hofstra Falls In CAA Opener At Charleston

Charleston, SC - Laura Masciullo matched her season high with 20 kills and Hannah Klemm added 35 assists and 11 digs but it was not enough as College of Charleston posted a 3-1 victory Friday night in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. Set scores were 25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 31-29.

Hofstra saw its four-match win streak end and slipped to 10-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play. Charleston improved to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.

The teams played a back-and-forth first set before the Cougars pulled away with three straight points to snap a 17-17 tie. Charleston dominated the second set, holding Hofstra to a negative hitting percentage (-.024) while hitting at a .375 clip.

Hofstra rebounded in the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead behind a pair of kills from Veronika Kostova, a kill from Semen Sen and a service ace from Klemm. The Pride would lead 22-18 before the Cougars scored two consecutive points to pull within two at 22-20. But Hofstra scored three straight behind two kills from Masciullo and an ace from Klemm to keep the match going.

The fourth set featured 17 lead changes as neither team could pull away. Both teams had set point opportunities before the Cougars were able to end the match with kills from Devon Rachel and Rianna Brennan.

Kostova had 10 kills for the Pride, while Luisa Domingues posted a team-high 18 digs.

Charleston was led by Kennedy Madison's 15 kills. McKala Rhodes had a match-high 25 digs, while Allison Beckman notched 50 assists.

Hofstra returns to action Sunday at UNCW. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.

-Hofstra fell to 4-6 all-time versus Charleston.
-Kostova has had double-digit kills in 12 matches this season.
-Masciullo posted her eighth match with 10 or more kills.
-Domingues has had 10 or more digs in all 14 matches.
