FH: Saltus and Marin Samper Lead Hofstra Past Rider

Hempstead, NY – Senior goalie Lauren Saltus posted a career-high 17 saves and classmate Claudia Marin Samper tied her career-highs with three goals and eight points in the contest to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 5-1 victory over the Broncs of Rider in a non-conference battle at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Pride improved to 3-4 on the season while the Broncs of Rider are now also 3-4 on the year.

Saltus, who easily topped her previous career-high of six saves set in games in both 2014 and 2015, made seven saves in the first half and 10 in the second half in front of a barrage of 26 shots by the Broncs of Rider.

Marin Samper, who tallied three goals in games against both Sacred Heart and Vermont and eight points against Sacred Heart in 2015, scored three of the first four Hofstra goals in the first 49 minutes to give the Pride a commanding 4-0 lead at the time. Marin Samper's eight points moves her into third-place with 122 on the Hofstra all-time career points chart, passing Jonel Boileau (114 from 2011-14) and Jamie Knoblich (120 from 1994-97). Marin Samper also moved into a fifth-place tie with Charlie Warner (2005-08) with 45 career goals and is now just two assists from tying Genna Kovar (34 from 2008-11) for the all-time assists mark.

Marin Samper opened the scoring at the 9:13 mark, taking a through pass from senior Stella Schoen that sent her in one-on-one with starting Rider goalie Voirrey Baker. Less than six minutes later, senior Carissa Witmer, who would save a goal with a defensive save in the second half, notched her third goal of the season, scoring off a penalty corner with Marin Samper inserting and senior Colby Hussong stopping and assisting on the play. The half ended 2-0 with the Pride ahead despite Rider having the stat advantages of 11-3 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners.

Marin Samper gave the Pride a 3-0 lead almost six minutes into the second half, picking up a save off the pads of Broncs replacement goalie Emily Gilligan and scoring her sixth goal of the year. Marin Samper completed the hat-trick eight minutes later, deflecting Witmer's shot off the penalty corner past Gilligan for a 4-0 advantage.

Rider got on the board in the 56th minute when Daane Koch hit a backhand shot from in the middle of the circle that beat Saltus and ruin any shutout hopes.

Hofstra freshman Lara Bittel, who recorded a defensive save earlier in the second half, closed out the scoring with her first collegiate goal off a lead pass from Marin Samper and then went around Gilligan for the goal.

Rider outshot the Pride 26-9 in the contest and had eight corners to Hofstra's two.

Hofstra returns to action on Monday, September 19 when the Pride host the Leopards of Lafayette at 4:30 p.m. at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. It will be the first meeting between Hofstra and Lafayette since both were members of the Division I East Coast Conference in 1989.
