FH: Schoen Leads Hofstra Over Lafayette

Hempstead, NY – Senior Stella Schoen tallied two goals and one assist to become the eighth Pride player to record 100 points in a career as Hofstra defeated Lafayette, 4-1 in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Monday evening.

The Pride, who won their second consecutive game and their third in the last four outings, evened their season record at 4-4. Lafayette, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, is now 5-2 on the season.

Schoen, who entered the contest with 97 career points, inched closer to the century mark by scoring the Pride's first goal of the contest and then topped the plateau with Hofstra's third goal of the game in the second half. She would assist on the Pride's final tally of the day. Schoen now has 39 goals and 24 assists for 102 points in her career.

But it was the Leopards of Lafayette who took the early lead, scoring just 5:23 into the contest off a penalty corner. Senior Amanda Magadan notched her third goal of the year off passes from junior Meg Lillis and freshman Lisa van der Geest for a 1-0 lead.

But Schoen tied the game at the 24:21 mark as Schoen scored off the penalty corner with graduate-student Marloes Schavemaker and senior Claudia Marin Samper assisting. After a slow start, the Pride and Leopards ended the half tied at 1-1 with Hofstra holding a 9-2 shot advantage and a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Hofstra freshman Lara Bittel scored her second goal of the season off a scramble in the goalmouth for a 2-1 lead at the 39:06 mark. Schoen boosted the lead to 3-1 on a great individual effort, going around Lafayette goalie Katelyn Arnold (6 saves) for her sixth of the season at the 53:11 mark.

The Pride closed out the scoring in the 67th minute with Schoen just missing the hat-trick as she fired a shot from near the top of the circle that was tipped by senior Emily Gallagher for her second goal of the year.

Hofstra senior goalie Lauren Saltus, who posted 17 saves against Rider last Saturday, made five saves Monday to post her third victory of the season.

Hofstra heads out on the road this Friday, September 23 when they travel to Massachusetts to face UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.
