Syracuse, N.Y. – Hofstra men's soccer held No. 5 Syracuse off the board for over 87 minutes, but a late goal off a corner kick gave the Orange a 1-0 victory over the Pride on Tuesday night at SU Soccer Stadium.
Hofstra (2-3-1) put forth an impressive defensive effort against an unbeaten Orange side. Syracuse (6-0) put up 11 shots in the first half, but the Pride backline ensured that very few were legitimately threatening, with just two making it on frame. One shot on goal came with about 12 minutes remaining in the first frame, but sophomore goalkeeper
Leonard Arkhanhelskyi made a highlight-reel save, leaping up to get a hand on the ball and tip it over the crossbar to keep the Orange off the board.
Coming out of halftime still scoreless, junior
Danny Elliott got a break on the left wing in the early moments of the second and got in behind the Syracuse keeper, who had come out to challenge, but a defender got back and stepped in front of Elliott's shot to keep the game scoreless. The Orange then quickly came down the field and nearly scored on the counterattack, but the play was ruled offside.
Arkhanhelskyi made another big save about midway through the second half, diving out to stop a blast from the left side. The Pride battled through the frame, allowing just four shots from one of the nation's top offenses.
Syracuse then found the back of the net in the 88th minute, with Johannes Pieles putting away Liam Callahan's corner kick. The Pride pushed for an equalizer, but ran out of time.
Arkhanhelskyi's four saves were a career high, and he's allowed just one goal in the past 288:15 of play.
Hofstra returns home this weekend to open Colonial Athletic Association play against James Madison at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
