Michela Rucli tied her career-high with 13 kills and freshman
Luisa Sydlik had the first double-double of her career with 14 assists and 10 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Stony Brook on Tuesday evening at the David S. Mack Fitness Center.
Hofstra improves to 4-0 with the win, while Stony Brook falls to 1-3 with the loss. The 4-0 start to the season is the program's first since 2013.
The Pride improve to 6-1 all-time in the battle of Long Island, including sweeps in three consecutive seasons.
Hofstra had a strong set offensively in the opening stanza as the Pride hit nearly .400 (.375) in earning the six-point win. Rucli and senior
Veronika Kostova were the stars for the Pride in the set with six and five kills, respectively.
Hofstra faced a large late deficit in the second stanza as Stony Brook led 21-16 before the Pride mounted its comeback. Hofstra used a 7-2 run to knot the score at 23 and would eventually get kills from junior
Leticia Valente and freshman
Laura Masciullo to end the set and take the commanding lead in the contest.
The momentum of the second set would carry over for the Pride as they had 13 kills to the Seawolves' 10 in earning the win in the final set.
Sophomore
Luisa Domingues posted a match-high 14 digs in the contest. Senior
Hannah Klemm tallied 25 assists for the Pride.
Stony Brook was led by eight kills and four digs from Jordan Gels. Morgan Kath tallied 27 assists, while Melann Amory added 12 digs for the Seawolves.
Hofstra returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the Rebel Challenge at UNLV. The Pride will face CSUN and UNLV on Friday before taking on Sacramento State on Saturday.
NOTES
- Hofstra has now won the first two meetings of the 2016-17 athletic year against Stony Brook as men's soccer defeated the Seawolves, 3-1, last week.
- Rucli previously established her career-high of 13 kills against Florida Gulf Coast on September 12, 2015.
- Kostova has now reached double-figures in kills in 10 straight matches, while Klemm posted double-figures in assists for the 91st consecutive contest.
