Charlotte, N.C. – Hofstra men's soccer fell to No. 22 UNC Charlotte, 6-0, Monday night at Transamerica Field.
The 49ers scored twice in 20 seconds in the first half to take a 2-0 lead with a goal off a corner kick from Callum Montgomery and a strike from Daniel Bruce shortly after play restarted in the 24th minute.
Moments later, junior
Mani Walcott had a try on net from long range that came in slowly but had to be knocked away at the last moment by Charlotte keeper Brian Panicco.
Senior defender
Rory Murphy made a defensive save on the goal line to keep the ball out on a shot from Brandt Bronico later in the frame.
Hofstra nearly got on the board with about a minute to go in the first half, with sophomore
Daniel Massey sending in a dangerous header that forced Panicco to make an acrobatic save. The rebound ricocheted out to junior
Meshack Eshun Addy, whose shot bounced off the inside of the crossbar.
The 49ers then notched their third on the counterattack to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
The Pride was awarded a penalty kick in the opening moments in the second half, but Panicco made the save.
With Hofstra down to 10 players, Charlotte made it 4-0 in 49th minute, 5-0 in the 69th and 6-0 in the 89th.
The Pride travels to Boston this weekend for a matchup with No. 11 Boston College on Friday before taking on Harvard on Sunday.
