Stony Brook, N.Y. – Senior
Joseph Holland scored two goals in less than two minutes in the second half to lift Hofstra men's soccer to a 3-1 win over local rival Stony Brook in Friday night's season opener at LaValle Stadium.
Though Stony Brook (0-1) generated a number of quality chances early on, Hofstra (1-0) struck first, with freshman
Luke Brown scoring his first career goal in the 20th minute. Junior
Meshack Eshun Addy served a ball in from the right corner, and Brown headed it on net. Seawolves keeper Tom McMahon made the first stop, but Brown headed in his own rebound to give the Pride the 1-0 lead. Brown was one of four starters making their collegiate debuts.
Stony Brook was quick to answer, however, as Thibault Duval netted the equalizer in the 26th minute.
In his first career start, sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Ashton denied a pair of consecutive corner kicks just moments later to keep the score even. Then, in the 41st minute, Ashton punched away a cross with Eduardo Valle streaking in on net to try to put it away.
Adding to Hofstra's stronger start to the second half, Holland decisively swung the momentum back in favor the Pride in the 75th minute, scoring two goals in 1 minute, 20 seconds, to give Hofstra a 3-1 lead. Holland's first came on a free kick from about 30 yards out, bending the kick around the Stony Brook wall of defenders and into the back of the net. Then, shortly after play had restarted, he collected a pass from senior
Lerthon Theuma and tucked a shot into the lower right corner from about 10 yards out. The assist was Theuma's first career helper.
The win was the Pride's first over the Seawolves since 2009 and 15th in the all-time series with Stony Brook. Hofstra also improved to 6-3-3 in its last 12 season openers.
Hofstra continues its road trip on Monday, heading to No. 22 UNC Charlotte for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
