BB: Annunziata and Cillis Lead Hofstra To Doubleheader Split

Hempstead, NY - Mat Annunziata hit two home runs and drove in four runs to back the pitching of Teddy Cillis, Chris Weiss and Alec Eisenberg as Hofstra won game one of a doubleheader with Northeastern, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Huskies salvaged a split by winning game two, 18-3.

Hofstra is 14-31 on the season, 5-14 in the CAA with the split. Northeastern is 24-21 and 8-8 in league action.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as David Leiderman scored on a wild pitch, but the Huskies drew even in the top of the sixth on a RBI single from Zach Perry. But Annunziata came up with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth on an 0-2 pitch to give the Pride the lead for good at 2-1. The sophomore would add his second home run of the game, a three-run blast, in the eighth to give Hofstra a four-run cushion. The home runs were the ninth of the season for Annunziata, tying him for the team lead.

Cillis (3-0) pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits. Weiss pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief but loaded the bases in the ninth. Eisenberg came on and got the final out for his first save of the season.

Annunziata finished 2-4 with the four RBIs. Steven Foster also had two hits in game one as well.

Josh Treff had two hits for the Huskies, while Aaron Civale (6-3) took the loss on the mound. The CAA's top pitcher allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) in 7 1/3 innings of work.

In game two the Huskies broke open a 4-3 game with 14 runs over the final two innings to take the win. Northeastern had 19 hits in the game led by Keith Kelly's four. Kelly had a three-run home run in the 10-run ninth inning. Mason Koppens had two hits and drove in five runs, while Pat Madigan had a two-run home run.

With the game tied at one, the Huskies scored three times in the sixth off of Pride starter John Rooney (2-7) to take a 4-1 lead. Koppens did the damage with a three-run triple to right field.

Hofstra cut the deficit to one, 4-3, on David Leiderman's two run home run to left, his sixth of the season. But the Huskies scored four times in the eighth and then added the 10 runs in the ninth.

Rooney allowed seven hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five batters. James Mulry got the win for Northeastern to improve to 3-6 on the year. He allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings of work.

Leiderman and Cillis had two hits for the Pride. Cillis also drove in the first Hofstra run.

The teams close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
