BB: Monmouth Gets Past Hofstra In 13 Innings

West Long Branch, NJ – Grant Lamberton's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning gave Monmouth a 5-4 win over Hofstra Tuesday evening at the Monmouth Baseball Field. The Hawks rallied in the eighth inning to tie the score at 4 after Hofstra had taken a 4-1 lead in its previous turn at bat.

Hofstra fell to 15-34 on the season, while the Hawks improved to 28-24. The victory was the second 5-4 win for Monmouth over the Pride as the teams played to the same score on March 23 at Hofstra.

Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Clay Koniencki drew a one-out walk and went to second on a groundout. Adam Favia then delivered a two-out single to drive in the Hawks first run.

The score remained that way until the top of the sixth when Steven Foster deposited a Joe Molettiere pitch over the right field fence for his first home run of the season, knotting the score at 1-1. The Pride went up 4-1 in the eighth as Kevin O'Connor scored on a throwing error and David Leiderman drove in two runs with a single.

The lead was short-lived as the Hawks plated three in the bottom to the frame to tie the game at 4. Three straight singles to open the inning resulted in one run with Robbie Alessandrine knocking in the first run. Christian Holland had an RBI single as well and Chris Gaetano drove in a run with a bases loaded walk. But Adam Heidenfelder came on in relief and struck out the final two batters of the inning with the bases loaded to preserve the tie.

Hofstra had a golden opportunity in the 10th inning as Foster led off with a walk and advanced to third as Brad Witkowski reached on bunt single and went to second on throwing error. But Justin Andrews retired the next three Hofstra batters to maintain the deadlock.

Monmouth got consecutive singles to start the inning and loaded the bases with one out to set up Lamberton. The Monmouth leadoff hitter took a 1-0 pitch from Zach Altieri (0-1) to left field that was deep enough to score Cary Jacobson with the winning run.

Foster and Leiderman each had two hits for the Pride. Altieri, the 10th pitcher of the day for the Pride, allowed the one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Jordan McCrum (2-1) threw three scoreless innings for Monmouth to pick up the win.

Hofstra returns to action Thursday at 3 p.m. when it begins a three-game series against CAA rival James Madison at University Field.
