BB: Hofstra Splits Doubleheader With Buffalo

Wappingers Falls, NY - Tom Archer and David Leiderman each had RBIs to back the pitching of John Rooney and three relievers as Hofstra earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader with Buffalo at Dutchess Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bulls won game one, 11-3.

Hofstra is 15-33 on the season, while Buffalo is 17-30.

The Pride jumped on the scoreboard first in game one, scoring in the top of the first inning as Archer singled and Brad Witkowski and Nick Bottari walked to load the bases with one out. Leiderman followed with a sacrifice fly to right to give Hofstra the lead. Archer gave the Pride an insurance run in the fourth as he collected his second hit of the game as his two-out single plated Steven Foster, who had doubled.

Buffalo cut the deficit in half in the fifth as Mike Abrunzo had an RBI single, but Rooney (3-7) escaped a first and third jam without any further damage. The freshman left-hander left after six innings, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Chris Weiss threw a perfect seventh inning, while Bowie Matteson followed with a scoreless eighth inning. Andrew Mundy worked around a leadoff single and a walk, inducing a game-ending double play for his second save of the season.

Archer finished game two with a pair of hits, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Charlie Sobieraski (4-6) took the loss for Buffalo, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.

Buffalo hit three home runs in game one, scoring seven runs off of the long ball, in an 11-3 win. Vinny Mallaro hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the game. The Bulls broke open a 4-3 game with a four-run eighth highlighted by two-run homers from Mallaro and Andrew Taft. Mallaro had a three-run home run in the third and also added a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.

Hofstra scored twice in the third on a two-run triple from Leiderman to cut the Buffalo lead to 4-2. The Pride would get a run in the fourth on Archer's single that drove in Bottari. Archer finished with two hits an RBI and a run score in game one.

Teddy Cillis (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. The red-shirt sophomore struck out seven.

Alec Tuohy (7-3) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings.

Hofstra plays its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Monmouth before closing out the regular season with a three-game home series against CAA-rival James Madison Thursday through Saturday.
