WLAX: Stunning Rally Lifts Hofstra Past William & Mary In CAA Opener

Williamsburg, VA – Freshman attacker Lexi Lenaghan scored the game-winner with 5:29 left in overtime as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team completed a stunning rally by scoring the game's final five goals in the Pride's 10-9 overtime win over William & Mary on Friday evening.

Hofstra trailed 9-5 with less than 19 minutes remaining in the contest before an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Carlee Ancona started the game-closing run.

The win improves the Pride's record to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. William & Mary falls to 6-6 and 0-2 in league action.

Graduate attacker Lindsay Scott led Hofstra with five points on four goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Lindsey Alfano had a solid all-around game with five draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

William & Mary was led by Shannon Quinn's two goals and two assists.

The game was tied at three early on as Hofstra got back-to-back goals from junior attacker Morgan Knox and Scott midway through the opening stanza. William & Mary was able to take a two-goal advantage into the break, though, as the Tribe got goals from Abby Corkum and Lindsey Jenks in the final 14:39 of the first half.

The Tribe made it a three-goal lead quickly to open the second half before sophomore midfielder Drew Shapiro and Scott answered to close the score to 6-5.

At that point, William & Mary would take what appeared to be a commanding four-goal lead as they scored three times in a four-minute span to make it 9-5 following a goal from Hannah Ryan.

Ancona would begin the run, and Lenaghan and Scott would star the rest of the way as Hofstra gradually closed the gap.

It would still be 9-6 in favor of the Tribe before Lenaghan scored with 5:54 left to cut the deficit to two goals and then Scott continued her spectacular season with two goals in a 27-second span to knot the game at nine with 4:02 left in regulation.

Neither team was able to score in the final minutes of regulation before Hofstra won the opening draw control of overtime and called time out to set up Lenaghan's heroics.

Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Carrera tied Alfano for game-high honors with five draw controls, while Lenaghan and Knox each posted a pair of goals in the game.

Freshman goalie Maddie Fields earned the win in net with five saves for the Pride. Shapiro added three draw controls, two ground balls and two points (goal and an assist), while Ancona chipped in with two points (goal and an assist) and a caused turnover. Senior defender Shelby Milne notched four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Hofstra continues the Virginia road trip with a game at James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
