ATH: Four Hofstra Athletic Programs Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards

Hempstead, NY – Four Hofstra University athletic teams have received NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards, it was announced today by the governing body.

Men's golf, softball, women's cross country and women's tennis all had multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each of their respective sports. This marks the most Hofstra has had in a single year.

"We are very proud of the outstanding academic achievements of these four programs," commented Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "Hofstra student-athletes strive for greatness in the classroom, in their respective sports and in the community. These four programs have created a culture of academic excellence and we congratulate them on this outstanding honor. A special 'thank you' to the student-athletes in these four programs for bringing this tremendous honor to our athletic program and University community."

The Hofstra Softball and Women's Tennis teams were both recipients of the Public Recognition Award a year ago.

This is the fourth time overall that softball has been recognized, the third time men's golf has been honored, the second time for women's tennis and the first time for women's cross country.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, these teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.

The 1,071 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads.

All Division I teams' APR scores will be released April 20. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
