WLAX: Hofstra Felled By #1 Maryland

College Park, Md. – Four Maryland players scored at least three goals as the top-ranked Terps defeated Hofstra, 20-5, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Graduate attacker Lindsay Scott recorded four goals and senior midfielder Becky Conto also scored for Hofstra, which still fell to 0-4. Maryland, the two-time defending national champion, improved to 4-0. The Terps have scored in double figure in three of four games. Maryland is 5-0 in the all-time series against the Pride.

Maryland, ranked No. 1 by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine, scored the game's first 12 goals and notched four goals in the second half's opening five minutes. Nine players scored for the Terps, which posted a 30-10 shot differential and a 26-9 advantage in shots on goal.

Megan Whittle and Zoe Stukenberg each scored four goals to pace Maryland. Kacie Longo and Taylor Cummings both added hat tricks while Jen Giles registered two goals. Maryland scored six goals in the opening five minutes to pull away early.

Cummings, a two-time Tewaaraton Award winner as the national player of the year, scored on all three of her shots. The senior midfielder added six draw controls as well.

Senior defender Alice Mercer, who joined Cummings on the 2016 Tewaaraton watch list, helped Maryland get through the game without allowing a single free-position shot.

Maryland scored the game's first 12 goals in taking a 12-1 lead into the half. The Terps established a 19-3 edge in shots through the opening period and scored on all but four of the team's on-target attempts heading into the break.

Scott scored Hofstra's first three goals and added the Pride's final tally to increase her team-leading goal total to 17. Scott posted one scoring strike in the first half and three in the second. She has led the team in goals in all four games. Her goals-per-game average led the Colonial Athletic Association entering the weekend.

Since transferring from North Carolina before the season, Scott has recorded a hat trick in her first four games at Hofstra. She had scored 17 goals in 30 career games for the Tar Heels from 2012-15 but has already matched that total in a Pride uniform.

Conto's unassisted goal with 13:31 left in the second half increased her season total to four. She had a hat trick in Hofstra's previous game versus Fairfield.

Hofstra will continue a three-game road swing on Sunday, March 13 with a 1 p.m. matchup at Johns Hopkins.
