MLAX: #8 Hofstra Upset By Georgetown’s Second Half Spurts

Hempstead, NY -  The Pride received two goals each from seniors Korey Hendrickson and Brian von Bargen and junior Josh Byrne but Hoyas' freshman Daniel Bucaro tallied three goals and one assist and junior Peter Conley added two goals and four assists as Georgetown upset eighth-ranked Hofstra, 11-6 at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Hofstra dropped its first game of the year and is now 3-1 on the season. The Hoyas won their first game of the season to improve to 1-3 on the year.

The Hoyas jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two goals by graduate-student Joe Bucci in the first 11 minutes for the early lead. But Hofstra answered with four unanswered goals as von Bargen started the run with his fifth of the season from Hendrickson with 2:18 to play in the first quarter to end the scoring in the period.

The Pride added three more in the first 6:32 of the second quarter as Hendrickson scored his third of the year, on the man-up, off a pass from sophomore Brendan Kavanagh just 42 seconds into the quarter to tie the game at 2-all. Von Bargen would get his second of the game three minutes later to give Hofstra a 3-2 lead before Byrne capped the run with a between-the-leg tally in front of Georgetown sophomore goalie Nick Marrrocco (15 saves) for his 13th goal of the season and a 4-2 lead with 8:28 to play in the half.

But the Hoyas answered with five consecutive goals over a span of 10:03 in the second and third quarters to regain the lead. Bucaro started it with a man-up goal from Conley with 5:39 to play in the half. Sophomore Zeke Morrill tied the game at 4-4 with his first of the season, on the man-up, with 2:03 to play in the half. The teams headed into the locker room at halftime knotted at 4-4.

Georgetown came out in the second half and scored three goals in the first 4:24 to open up a 7-4 advantage. Bucaro posted his second of the game and eighth of the season just 53 seconds into the third quarter. Junior Devon Lewis scored his fifth of the year 37 seconds later and sophomore Stephen Quinzi scored his third of the season less than a minute after that for the three-goal cushion. Conley assisted on the final two goals in the run.

Byrne closed the Hofstra deficit to 7-5 with his second of the game and 14th of the season with 2:39 to play in the third quarter. But the Hoyas responded with three more unanswered goals as Conley scored with 12 seconds to play in the third and Bucaro and sophomore Matt Behrens scored in the first 3:38 of the fourth quarter to open up a 10-5 advantage.

Hendrickson notched his second of the contest for the Pride with his second man-up tally of the game with 4:45 to play before Conley sealed the victory for Georgetown with his second of the game and fifth of the season with 3:11 to play for the 11-6 final.

While Hofstra won the battle for ground balls, 32-30 and face-offs, 13-8 the Pride were hampered by 17 turnovers in the game including 10 in the second half. Hofstra sophomore goalie Jack Concannon made 14 saves in the Pride cage including nine in the first half. The Georgetown victory was helped the Hoyas defense holding Hofstra senior standout Sam Llinares without a point in the game.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, March 12 when the Pride close out their four-game homestand by hosting the Buckeyes of Ohio State at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is noon.
