MLAX: Von Bargen Leads #14 Hofstra Past #20 Ohio State

Hempstead, NY - Brian von Bargen scored a career-high three goals and Jack Concannon stopped 14 shots as No. 14 Hofstra posted an 8-5 win over #20 Ohio State Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra improved to 4-1 with the win, while Ohio State slipped to 5-2. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Buckeyes.

The teams played a low scoring first half that saw the Pride hold a 3-2 lead at halftime. Von Bargen opened the scoring 2:09 into the game with an unassisted tally. Ohio State's Jack Jasinski tied the game off a feed from Austin Shanks, 51 seconds later. That would be the final tie of the contest as Korey Hendrickson and Josh Byrne scored back-to-back second quarter goals to put the Pride, 3-1, with 11:51 to play. Ryan Hunter cut the Buckeyes deficit in half off pass from Jasinski with 2:24 to go.

The Pride got a man-up goal from von Bargen, from Sam Llinares, 58 seconds into the third quarter and a second goal from Hendrickson at the 4:12 mark to go up 5-2. The game would go to the fourth quarter with that score, though Ohio State would score two of the next three goals to get within two, 6-4, with 11:06 remaining.

But Trevor Kupecky scored his four goal of the season with Byrne notching the assist to give Hofstra a three-goal cushion, 7-4, with 6:41 on the clock. Byrne added a goal, his 16th of the season, a minute later to make it 8-4. Shanks kept Ohio State's comeback hopes alive with a goal at the 10:30 mark, but Concannon tallied saves on the Buckeye's final four shots to preserve the win.

Byrne finished with two goals and an assist, while Hendrickson also had two goals and an assist.
