Queens, NY – Senior
Sam Llinares tallied five goals and one assist and junior
Josh Byrne added four goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 15-8 victory over the Red Storm of St. John's at DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.
The Pride recorded their second consecutive victory to improve to 6-3 on the season as they wrapped up their non-conference portion of their schedule. St. John's, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest, fell to 1-8 on the year.
Llinares, who topped the 20-goal mark for the third time in his career, tallied two of his five goals during the Pride's seven-goal run in the middle two periods that turned a one-goal deficit into a rout for Hofstra. It was Llinares' third five-goal contest of the season after doing the same against North Carolina and NJIT.
Byrne tallied four goals or more for the third time this season as well, scoring two in the first quarter, and one in each of the second and third quarters. He leads the team with 22 goals and nine assists for 31 points.
Seniors
Brian von Bargen and Korey Kupecky and junior
Trevor Kupecky each tallied two goals. Sophomore
Jack Concannon made 12 saves in the contest including seven in the second half to secure the victory.
Eight St. John's players scored single goals with Corey Haynes and Jason DeBenedictis each adding an assist to go with their goals.
In a wild first half that featured 17 goals and five tied scores, it was the Red Storm who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Kyle Skramko and James Bonanno in the first 1:25. But the Pride tallied the next three scores as Byrne, Hendrickson and Llinares over the next 4:01 to take a 3-2 lead. After Haynes tied the game at 3-3, von Bargen and Byrne added Hofstra goals to take a 5-3 advantage with 3:17 to play in the first quarter.
But the Red Storm answered with three straight goals by Evan Larsen, Jackson O'Leary and Declan Swartwood to regain the lead at 6-5 just 50 seconds into the second quarter. After Llinares and Chris Buscemi exchanged goals to move the score to 7-6 with 6:38 to play in the half, the Pride got offense and defense in synch and started their run.
Hofstra ended the half with four goals, by Hendrickson, Byrne and two by Kupecky, to take a 10-6 lead at the break before adding goals by Byrne and two by Llinares in the third for a 13-7 lead after 45 minutes. DeBenedictis added his 20th goal of the year just 2:17 into the fourth quarter for the Red Storm but it was too little, too late as von Bargen and Llinares each tallied their 20th goals of the season in the final seven minutes to put the game away for the Pride.
The Pride outshot St. John's, 37-34 and picked up 30 ground balls to the Red Storm's 27. Hofstra, which played without their starting face-off specialist
Kris Clarke due to illness, won just nine of 26 face-offs.
Hofstra begins its 2016 Colonial Athletic Association schedule next Saturday night, April 2 when they host the Stags of Fairfield University at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
