Hempstead, NY – Hofstra senior
Korey Hendrickson scored a career-high six goals but Stags freshman Colin Burke tallied three goals and four assists to lead Fairfield to a 9-8 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday night.
Hofstra, which saw a two-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the CAA while Fairfield improved to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.
Hendrickson, who broke his previous best of four goals against Siena in 2014, scored once in the first, twice in the second and third and once in the fourth for his career night. Senior
Brian von Bargen added a goal and two assists while classmate
Sam Llinares added the final Pride goal. Sophomore goalie
Jack Concannon made a career-high 16 saves in the Pride cage.
Burke, a three-time CAA Rookie of the Week selection including last week, posted a season-high seven points including two big goals and an assist in the final quarter. Sophomore Joe Rodrigues and senior Conor Dalton each added two goals for the Stags. Junior Tyler Behring made 13 saves in the Stags goal.
The Pride, looking to avenge a 5-4 loss to the Stags in the 2015 regular season finale that knocked Hofstra out of CAA Championship contention, had a similar first quarter as their encounter a year ago. Hofstra's Hendrickson opened the scoring with 3:12 to play in the period with his 14
th of the season. But Fairfield's T.J. Neubauer tied the game just 42 seconds later as the period ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
Three lead changes occurred in the second quarter as Fairfield's Joe Rodrigues gave the Stags a 2-1 lead just 2:33 into the quarter. But Hofstra answered with back-to-back goals by Hendrickson to give the Pride a 3-2 advantage with 6:58 to play in the half. It was Hendrickson's second hat-trick of the season and third of his career.
Fairfield responded with three unanswered goals as Conor Dalton, Jake Knostman and Joe Rodrigues scored for the Stags to regain the lead at 5-3 with 2:07 to play in the half. But Hofstra's
Brian von Bargen fired in his 21
st of the season with 32 seconds to play in the half to close the deficit to 5-4 at the intermission.
Hendrickson continued to dent the twine in the third, getting his fourth just 1:11 into the period to tie the game at 5-5. Fairfield's Colin Burke scored the first of his three second half goals less than two minutes later to give the Stags a 6-5 advantage. But Hendrickson scored his fifth of the contest with 5:24 to play in the third that tied the contest at 6-6 after three quarters.
Hendrickson would give the Pride a 7-6 lead just 1:13 into the fourth quarter off a pass from von Bargen. The six goals equaled
Sam Llinares' six goals against Manhattan in 2015. But penalties would crush the Pride in the final period as Burke notched his second of the game with 6:32 to play to tie up the contest and would add a man-up tally a minute later for an 8-7 lead. T.J. Neubauer would boost the lead to 9-7 with 4:15 to play with his second of the contest off a pass from Conor Dalton.
Hofstra closed the deficit to 9-8 on
Sam Llinares' 21st goal of the year, on the man-up, off a pass from von Bargen with 30 seconds to play. But could not get the ball back in to the offensive end in the final seconds for a chance to tie it.
Hofstra outshot Fairfield, 34-33 but Fairfield won the ground ball battle, 27-24. The Pride also won the face-off war, winning 11 of 20.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, April 9 when the Pride host the Blue Hens of Delaware on Alumni Day at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
