BB: Hofstra Falls To William & Mary

Williamsburg, VA - Mat Annunziata, Teddy Cillis and Nick Bottari each homered, but William & Mary posted 17 hits on the way to a 15-9 victory over Hofstra Saturday night at Plumeri Park.

Hofstra fell to 5-18 overall and 0-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. William & Mary is 12-11, 4-1 in the CAA.

Annunziata put Hofstra up in the first inning with a three-run home run, but the Tribe came back with two runs in the second to cut the lead to one. Cillis gave the Pride an insurance run in the third with a solo home run that made it a 4-2 ballgame.

William & Mary would respond with a four-run frame highlighted by a two-run double by Cullen Large to take a 6-4 lead. Hofstra came right back in the fourth as Bottari homered and two more runs came in on an error to allow the Pride to retake the lead, 7-6.

That would be Hofstra's last lead as the Tribe scored four runs in the sixth to take a 10-7 lead. Hunter Smith's two-run double was the big hit in the inning. Hofstra took advantage of the Tribe's inability to find the strike zone in the seventh, drawing five consecutive walks to score two runs and make it a one-run game, 10-9. But William & Mary would score four more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

John Rooney (1-3) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings of work. Bodie Sheehan (2-3) earned the win in relief after allowing two runs on one hit in 3 1/3 innings of work. Joseph Gaouette picked up his fifth save.

Bottari, Annunziata and Ryan Karl each had two hits for the Pride. Smith drove in six runs for the Tribe and had three hits. Charles Ameer was 4-6 with two runs.

Hofstra will try to avoid being swept when the series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
