Hempstead, NY – Graduate attacker
Lindsay Scott tied for game-high honors with four goals, but Rutgers' Halley Barnes led a strong Scarlet Knight offense as Rutgers earned an 18-13 victory over Hofstra on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Barnes posted four goals for Rutgers, while Macy Scott and Kim Kolodny each added three goals.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 1-6 this season, while Rutgers improves to 3-7.
Sophomore midfielder
Carolyn Carrera and senior midfielder
Becky Conto were spectacular in the draw circle for Hofstra as Carrera had a career-high 10 draw controls, while Conto notched six in the game. That duo helped the Pride to a convincing 22-12 advantage in draw controls.
Sophomore midfielder
Drew Shapiro had her second straight hat trick with three goals, while junior attacker
Morgan Knox had a career-best three assists and junior attacker
Tiana Parrella posted a goal and two assists for the Pride.
An entertaining first half would see the two teams combine for 17 goals as the visitors would take a 9-8 lead into the break. Hofstra would fall behind, 6-3, following a goal from Rutgers' Scott with 16:11 left in the opening stanza before making a comeback.
Shapiro would start a quick 3-0 spurt for the Pride as the home squad knotted the game at six with three goals in a span of 1:17. Scott scored the second goal during the run, while Shapiro completed the rally with another tally.
The Scarlet Knights took a two-goal lead later in the half before back-to-back goals from freshman attacker
Lexi Lenaghan and Scott with roughly six minutes left evened the score at eight. Rutgers took the one-goal into the intermission as Barnes scored with 3:58 left in the half.
Each team would score once in the first three minutes of the second half before Rutgers took control with three straight goals to lead 13-9 with 23:47 remaining following a goal from Barnes.
Hofstra closed the gap to 13-11 with goals from Lenaghan and Scott, the last at the 20:34 mark, as it looked as if the Pride would make a rally in the contest.
Rutgers would take control of the game at that point, though, as they outscored the Pride, 5-1, over the next roughly 15 minutes to take a commanding six-goal advantage with under five minutes to play.
The Scarlet Knights would go on to capture the five-goal win as a goal from sophomore midfielder
Carlee Ancona accounted for the game's final tally.
Senior defender
Shelby Milne had three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Pride, while junior goalie
Alexis Greene posted 10 saves in net.
Bianca Dente made three saves for Rutgers in nearly 45 minutes of action to earn the win for the Scarlet Knights.
Hofstra is back in action on Sunday when it hosts #18 Ohio State at 12 p.m.
