Brian von Bargen tallied four goals, including the game-winner 1:11 into the first overtime as the Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 13-12 victory over Vermont on Tuesday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Hofstra improves to 5-3 with the victory, while Vermont slips to 3-5 with the loss.
Von Bargen added an assist for a five-point day, while senior midfielder
Korey Hendrickson posted three goals and an assist in the contest. Sophomore goalie
Jack Concannon posted 14 saves in the win for the Pride.
Ian Mackay had five points on four goals and one assist for Vermont, while Cam Milligan posted one goal and four assists to also tally five points in the game for the Catamounts.
Hofstra got off to a hot start in the game as the Pride scored the game's first four goals to lead 4-0 at the 9:21 mark of the first quarter following an unassisted goal from junior attacker
Josh Byrne.
The Pride would take as large as a five-goal advantage in the first half on a pair of occasions, the last at 7-2 as Hendrickson tallied an unassisted goal with 5:59 left before intermission.
Von Bargen was the star of the opening 30 minutes for Hofstra as he had three first half goals to power the Pride to the first half advantage. With the three first half goals and four in the game, von Bargen now has hat tricks in two straight games and three times this season. In addition, he has scored at least two goals in seven consecutive contests.
With Hofstra ahead 7-2, Vermont would score the last two goals of the first half as Mackay scored a pair of goals in the last six minutes of the half to cut the halftime deficit to three goals.
Vermont would use a 5-0 scoring run spanning the two halves to eventually knot the score at seven following a goal from Jack Knight with 10:44 remaining in the third quarter.
Back-to-back goals from sophomore attacker
Brendan Kavanagh and Hendrickson would put Hofstra back in front at 9-7 with 5:24 to play as the Pride regained the momentum in the contest.
The Catamounts had one last run left in them, though, and UVM would score four straight goals, the last from Karl Weller with 4:30 left in regulation, to take a 12-11 lead on the Pride. It marked Vermont's first lead of the contest.
Needing a goal to send the game to an extra session, Byrne came up huge and scored off an assist from senior attacker
Sam Llinares with 20 seconds left to knot the game at 12.
It didn't take long in the first overtime as Hofstra took just over a minute to find the back of the net with von Bargen giving the home squad its second overtime win of the season.

Jon Kaplan made 11 saves in the game for Vermont. Luc LeBlanc had a game-high seven ground balls for the Catamounts.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it travels to local rival St. John's for a 1 p.m. contest.
NOTES- Hofstra leads the all-time series with Vermont, 9-0. Tonight marked the first meeting between the programs since a 16-7 Hofstra victory in Burlington in 2001. The two schools were former conference rivals in the America East Conference.
- With his 18 goals this season, von Bargen has more than doubled his career goals total entering this year. He entered his senior campaign with 15 career goals.
- Hendrickson has scored a goal in seven straight goals and recorded his first hat trick of the season tonight.
- Kavanagh has multiple goals in two straight games.
