WBB: Hofstra Clinches Third Seed In Road Victory Over Northeastern

Boston – Senior guard Jakelle King-Gilchrist scored a season-high 18 points and junior guard Krystal Luciano knocked down five three-pointers for her 15 points to help Hofstra erase a 16-point deficit in a 71-64 victory over Northeastern from the Cabot Center to conclude the regular season on Wednesday evening.

Hofstra clinched the third seed with Drexel's win over Towson as will rematch sixth-seeded Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship quarterfinals on Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. from the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

The Pride earned the third seed for the second consecutive season in improving to 22-7. Hofstra finished 13-5 in CAA play while Northeastern dropped to 14-15 and 9-9. Hofstra, which already has clinched the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in the program's Division I era, matched the 2006-07 team for the most CAA wins. That squad also went 13-5.

Junior forward Anjie White added 15 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting. Senior guard Darius Faulk nearly posted her second career double-double by logging 10 points and eight assists. Northeastern's Jess Genco scored a team-high 17 points, Samantha DeFreese scored 14 and Francesca Sally added 15 off the bench.

King-Gilchrist's left-corner three-pointer in front of the Hofstra bench broke a 56-all tie with 2:59 left. Playing in her first collegiate regular season game, King-Gilchrist fell one point shy of her career high set versus Charleston on Jan. 4, 2015. Her 7-for-13 shooting, which included a trio of three-pointers, exceeded her previous season high of 15 set on Opening Day versus Navy.

Following King-Gilchrist's clutch three-pointer, White posted both of her steals as part of Hofstra's full-court press. The pressure facilitated sophomore forward Ashunae Durant's free throw for a 62-56 Hofstra edge. Luciano added an off-balanced three-pointer with the shot clock expiring for a 65-58 edge with 1:04 left to secure the win.

Northeastern built a 16-point lead in the first half, though Hofstra shaved the lead to a single point at the half. Luciano and King-Gilchrist combined for five three-pointers in the second quarter to bring the Pride within 31-30 at the break.

A 13-0 first-quarter run saw the Huskies shut out Hofstra for 6:16 as the Pride missed 12 consecutive field goal attempts. Sophomore guard Aleana Leon made two free throws but Northeastern responded on DeFreese's jumper for a 15-6 lead after the opening quarter.

Genco's left-wing jumper put Northeastern ahead, 22-8, and DeFreese's turnaround jumper gave the Huskies a game-high-16 point-edge before King-Gilchrist and Luciano hit back-to-back three-pointers. King-Gilchrist then scored five straight points for an 11-0 Hofstra run that brought the Pride within 24-19.

The Pride made seven consecutive field goals near the end of the second quarter and out-scored the Huskies, 24-16, in the period.

Hofstra swept the regular season series against the Huskies and will be looking for a third win this season in the conference tournament. Hofstra is 20-18 in the all-time series and has won the last seven. Northeastern has not won in the series since the 2012-13 campaign. The last time the teams met in the CAA Championship was the 2013 quarterfinals in which the Pride won, 57-52.
