WBB: Hofstra’s Comeback Bid Falls Short In Quarterfinal Loss To Northeastern

Upper Marlboro, Md. – Northeastern surged to a 28-point lead and Hofstra couldn't complete its comeback bid as the Pride lost, 65-54, to the Huskies in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship quarterfinals on Thursday night at Show Place Arena.

Sixth-seeded Northeastern (15-15) posted a 42-18 halftime lead and closed out third-seeded Hofstra to advance to the semifinals against second-seeded Drexel in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. Top-seeded James Madison will take on fifth-seeded Delaware in the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m.

Hofstra fell to 22-8 and will await its fate with Monday evening's WNIT selection announcement. The Pride will be looking to make the WNIT for the second consecutive season for the first time since the 2006 and 2007 squads qualified in back-to-back campaigns.

Jess Genco's 19 points paced all scorers and Samantha DeFreese scored 15 points and totaled nine rebounds. Four Huskies finished in double figures.

Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant notched her 10th double-double this season in finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Anjie White nearly recorded a double-double as well in racking up eight points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes before fouling out. But Hofstra fell to 9-15 all-time in the CAA Championship. The Pride is 4-6 in tournament games held at Show Place Arena. The championship will move to campus sites starting next season.

Senior guard Darius Faulk scored 13 points in going 9-for-10 at the line in her final career conference tournament game. Northeastern's Kazzidy Stewart scored 11 points to provide the secondary scoring.

The Pride cut Northeastern's lead to single digits in the final minute on Durant's final-minute three pointer to make it 63-54. But the Pride would not get closer as Northeastern's defensive effort held Hofstra to 2-of-18 on three-point attempts.

Genco scored 13 points in the opening half on 5-of-6 shooting and Stewart also needed just one half to score in double figures by notching 10 points.

Northeastern shot 8-for-8 from the line and connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers to surge to a 27-9 lead after the opening quarter.

A 12-2 run almost five minutes in prompted a Hofstra timeout to stem a stretch that saw Northeastern score 10 consecutive points. The Huskies then extended the lead to 20-2 with an overall 18-0 run. Stewart and Genco each scored eight points in the opening period and shot 63.6 percent from the field in the period (7-for-11).

Hofstra cut the deficit to less than 20 with a 7-0 run to end the third quarter down 54-35. But Hofstra would not get within less than 10 until Durant's three-pointer in the last minute.

Junior guard Kelly Loftus made her first game appearance since Feb. 14 at JMU. She made her only field goal attempt for two points in three minutes.

Hofstra faced Northeastern in the CAA Championship for the first time since 2013 when the Pride won in the quarterfinals. Coincidently, the Pride ended the regular season against Northeastern before facing the Huskies in a rematch the next game in the conference tournament.
