MLAX: von Bargen’s Hat Trick Not Enough As #12 Hofstra Falls At Providence

Providence, RI – Senior midfielder Brian von Bargen had four points on three goals and one assist for #12 Hofstra, but Brendan Kearns tallied six points (3G, 3A) to lead Providence to a 12-7 victory over the Pride on Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

It marked von Bargen's second hat trick of the season after tallying one against Ohio State. Sophomore attacker Brendan Kavanagh had his first multiple goal game of the season with a pair of goals for the Pride.

The loss drops Hofstra's record to 4-3 this season, while Providence improves to 4-3.

Hofstra found itself in an early hole as the Pride trailed, 5-1, nearly 14 minutes into the contest as Providence took advantage of several Hofstra penalties.

With the game tied at one at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter, Providence scored five straight goals, three of the man-up variety, to lead 5-1 with 1:18 to go in the opening stanza.

A goal from Kavanagh ended the Friar run and would actually start a 3-0 Pride run that closed the gap to 5-4 with 7:52 left in the first half. Senior midfielder Korey Hendrickson and von Bargen, who opened the scoring in the game, joined in the run for Hofstra. Providence scored the final goal of the half, courtesy of Kearns, to take a two-goal lead into the intermission.

Each team would find the back of the net once in the third quarter as Kearns scored again for the Friars before von Bargen recorded his second hat trick of the season with an unassisted goal at the 7:59 mark to make it 7-5.

Senior attacker Sam Llinares would finally get on the scoreboard with 8:28 to play in regulation to make it an 8-6 game but Providence would have an answer once again as the Friars scored twice in the span of seven seconds to lead 10-6 with just over eight minutes left.

Hofstra would be unable to close the deficit as the Friars went on to capture the five-goal victory.

Sophomore goalie Jack Concannon had seven saves for the Pride, while Llinares finished with two points on a goal and an assist.

Tate Boyce tallied 11 saves for Providence, which got four points (1G, 3A) from Will Mazzone.

von Bargen added three ground balls for the Pride, while senior defender Finn Sullivan added three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Hofstra has a quick turnaround for its next contest as the Pride will host Vermont on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from James M. Shuart Stadium.
