MLAX: #12 Hofstra Drops Road Decision To #13 Stony Brook

Hempstead, N.Y. – Stony Brook scored the game's first seven goals and protected the lead as 12th-ranked Hofstra fell to the 13th-ranked Seawolves, 13-5, on Tuesday evening from LaValle Stadium.

Senior attacker Sam Llinares and senior midfielder Brian von Bargen both scored two goals for Hofstra, which lost for just the second time this season. Hofstra, ranked 12th in both the USILA and Lacrosse Magazine's national polls, fell to 4-2 on the season. Stony Brook, ranked 13th and 15th, improved to 5-1 in winning the first meeting between the schools since 2009.

Stony Brook's Brody Eastwood netted a hat trick in the opening half and finished with a game-high four goals. Alex Corpolongo and Matt Schultz each scored three goals for the Seawolves. Shultz contributed two assists for a five-point game and Challen Rogers registered two goals and two assists in the Seawolves' wire-to-wire win. Stony Brook goalkeeper Zach Oliveri made eight saves in the opening half before giving way to Brandon Maciejewski to start the third quarter.

Junior attacker Josh Byrne netted seven shots but saw his point streak end at five. Von Bargen extended his goal and point streak to five.

Stony Brook scored on eight of its first 12 shots on net to take command early. Llinares tried to ignite a comeback by scoring Hofstra's first two second-quarter goals, but Oliveri stopped eight of Hofstra's 11 on-target shots in the opening half to help the Seawolves post an 8-3 lead at the break. Von Bargen's goal with less than 25 seconds left cut the deficit to five heading into the locker room.

Stony Brook scored the opening six goals 10:04 in. Four different Seawolves posted goals, starting with Corpolongo's high-side strike. Eastwood's short-side goal off a ground ball made it a two-goal lead and Schultz and Jeff Reh scored 23 seconds apart.

Rogers then scored two goals in a 45-second span for a six-goal advantage. Hofstra tried to get back in it whenthe Seawolves were whistled for two infractions on the same sequence for a two-man advantage for 45 seconds. But Oliveri made a save and Eastwood scored a shorthanded goal with seven seconds left to give the Seawolves a 7-0 lead after the opening period.

Llinares gave Hofstra a jolt with a goal off a spin move to put the Pride on the scoreboard 4:09 in. The 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year helped Hofstra respond after Eastwood potted his third goal by tallying another unassisted goal to make it 8-2. In the last minute, von Bargen scored off Brendan Kavanagh's feed to make it a five-goal game. Hofstra trailed at the half for just the second time this season.

Hofstra twice cut Stony Brook's lead to five, including senior midfielder Korey Hendrickson's seventh goal of the season with 9:33 left in the third to make it 9-4. Schultz responded with back-to-back goals to end the third and provide breathing room for the Seawolves.

Llinares, who is on the Tewaaraton watch list, extended his career goal total to 86. That moved him into sole possession of 12th place on the program's all-time list, moving past Dom DiNardo and Mike Laudenslager.

The Pride now leads the all-time series, 4-3, with the Seawolves snapping its two-game losing streak in the matchup.

Hofstra will cap a two-game road swing on Saturday against Providence. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Anderson Stadium.
