BB: Hofstra Drops Heartbreaker In Finale At Longwood

Farmville, VA - Hofstra rallied in the top of the ninth with a pair of solo home runs to take a 5-4 lead but for the second consecutive game Longwood rallied in their final at-bat and posted a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon to complete a series sweep.

Hofstra fell to 4-10 overall, while Longwood improved to 10-6. The Lancers had posted a 4-3 win in 12 innings on Saturday.

The Pride entered the ninth inning trailing 4-3, but Nick Bottari led off with a solo home run (his third of the year) to tie the score and, one batter later, Teddy Cillis delivered his first home run of the season to put Hofstra ahead.

In the bottom of the ninth, John Rooney retired the leadoff batter but then gave up consecutive singles to C.J. Roth and Michael Osinski. Alex Lewis followed with a two-run double to centerfield to give Longwood the win.

Rooney (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Hofstra starter Bowie Matteson allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings in a no decision.

Sean Pico (1-0), who blew the save, earned the win for the Lancers. Luke Simpson went eight innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Bottari, Vito Friscia and Steven Foster each had two hits on the afternoon. Bottari had tallied an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Fairleigh Dickinson with a 3 p.m. start.
