WBB: Hofstra Runs Away From Harvard In WNIT First Round Win

Hempstead, NY  - Darius Faulk nearly had a triple-double with 19 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 13 assists, and Aleana Leon added career-highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead Hofstra to a 76-50 rout of Harvard in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra also got strong performances from Jakelle King-Gilchrist, who had 18 points and six rebounds, Ashunae Durant, who had 12 points, and Anjie White, who chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.

The Pride, which advances to play at Villanova in the WNIT Second Round, improved to 23-8 on the season. Harvard sees its season end at 14-14.

The game was never in doubt from the onset as Hofstra closed the first period on an 18-0 run that lasted the final 6:24 to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 22-6 lead. The Pride shot 7-11 in the run and received points from five different players including five from King-Gilchrist.

The Pride would extend the lead in the second period to 23, 38-15, on a layup from Sandra Dongmo with 3:03 remaining in the period. After Harvard cut the deficit to 19, 38-19, on a pair of free throws from Sydney Skinner and a layup from AnnMarie Healy, the Pride closed out the scoring with a three-pointer from Olivia Askin to take a 41-19 lead at halftime.  Hofstra shot 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 21 percent for the Crimson.

Harvard cut the deficit to 15, 48-33, with 4:08 to play following a 10-0 run that featured six points from Kit Metoyer. But the Pride responded with four straight points to quell the rally and went back up by 20, 56-36, with just over a minute left in the third on a three-pointer from King-Gilchrist. The teams traded baskets in the final 44 second and Hofstra lead by a 58-38 score at the end of the third.

Hofstra opened the fourth period on a 7-0 run to take its then largest lead of the game at 27, 65-38, with 8:12 to go. Harvard cut the deficit to 23, but Hofstra went back up by 27 with 4:42 to go on a layup from King-Gilchrist. Hofstra's largest lead would be 29, 74-45, with 1:44 to play.

Healy was the only Harvard player in double-figures with 10 points. Metoyer and Destiny Nunley each added nine points.

Hofstra finished the game shooting 53 percent from the floor, while Harvard shot 27 percent from the field.

The game was a rematch of the 2012 WNIT first round which Harvard won, 73-71. The teams have had two regular season meetings since then with Harvard taking both decisions. The Hofstra victory tonight snapped a four-game losing streak against the Crimson.

The Pride will face Villanova on the road Saturday with a 6 p.m. tip-off time.
