WBB: White’s Double-Double Leads Hofstra Over Towson In CAA Play

Towson, Md. – Junior forward Anjie White set a career high with 20 rebounds and added 14 points to power Hofstra to a 74-56 victory over Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Sunday at SECU Arena.

Hofstra out-scored Towson, 25-8, in the third quarter to tip the balance and turn a deficit into the Pride's third win in the last four road games. Hofstra improved to 17-5 and 8-3 in CAA play. The Tigers fell to 5-17 and 2-9 in league play.

Four Hofstra players scored in double figures. Senior guard Asia Jackson tallied 15 points and four rebounds off the bench. Senior guard Darius Faulk posted 13 points and seven assists and junior guard Krystal Luciano recorded seven points and eight assists.

Dominique Johnson and Raven Bankstrom each paced Towson by scoring 15 points. Hofstra swept the regular season series over Towson and has won four in a row against the Tigers. Hofstra is 32-30 in the all-time series.

White needed less than three quarters to best her previous career of high of 13 rebounds, which she set on Nov. 13 versus Navy. Hofstra's single-game rebounding record is 24 by Leslie Schlegel versus Drexel on Feb. 9, 1991. White's 20 rebounds was a Hofstra season high and just the eighth time a Hofstra player registered 20 rebounds in a game. The last Pride player to grab 20 rebounds was Shante Evans in 2012-13.

Towson took a lead at halftime, though Hofstra quickly erased the deficit coming out of the break. White's layup early in the third quarter put Hofstra ahead, 29-27, and marked her season's third double-double. Luciano followed by hitting a jumper to cap a stretch of three straight made field goals to give the Pride a four-point lead and put the Pride ahead for good.

A 9-0 run late in the third quarter extended Hofstra's lead to 40-29. Loftus' three-point capped the stretch and helped power a 19-4 overall run to begin the quarter.

Hofstra sophomore forward Ashunae Durant and Towson's Daijha Thomas got tangled up with 3:47 left in the third with Durant needing to come out of the game. Durant returned to start the fourth quarter and finished with six points and four rebounds.

Junior guard Kelly Loftus, who entered the game as Hofstra's leading scorer, left the game injured on the first quarter's final possession. She sat out the second quarter before returning. Loftus was averaging 14 points entering the contest and scored nine of her 12 points in the second half.

The Pride out-scored the Tigers, 49-29, in the second half. Hofstra's bench out-scored Towson's, 22-14. All nine players who saw game action for the Pride scored at least two points.

Jackson shot 7-for-8 from the line. Hofstra used an aggressive offense to generate 27 free throw attempts compared to just nine for Towson.

Seven players scored for Hofstra in the opening half, though Towson went into the break on a 7-0 run to take a 27-25 lead. Johnson hit a three-pointer on Towson's final first-half possession, capping a 20-minute stretch in which she scored 10 points and compiled four assists. White gave Hofstra an inside presence, grabbing 10 boards, including four on the offensive glass, and scoring six points in the opening half. It was just the sixth time in 22 games the Pride did not lead at the half.

Hofstra will continue a three-game road swing with a trip through William & Mary and James Madison next week. The Pride will oppose the Tribe on Friday at 7 p.m. before heading to Harrisburg, Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a game televised on American Sports Network.
