WBB: Torrid Third Quarter Pushes Hofstra Past Tribe

Williamsburg, Va. – Hofstra dominated play in the third quarter in coming out of the break on a 17-2 run to power the Pride to a 61-53 come-from-behind road victory over William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Friday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Pride saw two player log double-doubles in the same game for the first time this season. Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant posted her seventh double-double of the season and tied her career high with 21 points and tallied 12 rebounds and junior forward Anjie White registered 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Hofstra won its second straight game and eighth in the last 10 games to improve to 18-5 and 9-3 in CAA play. Hofstra swept the two-game regular season series against William & Mary. The Tribe fell to 13-10 and 4-8 despite Alexandra Masaquel scoring 24 points and hauling in nine rebounds.

Durant notched her third 20-point game of the season and scored 21 points in a game for the third time in her career and first since Jan. 15 at UNCW. Hofstra saw two players post double-doubles in a game for the first time since Jan. 22, 2015 versus Drexel, when Durant and Elo Edeferioka both accomplished the feat. White posted her fourth double-double this season and for a second straight game in shooting 4-of-5 from the field and adding 11 rebounds. White also blocked four shots in 26 minutes.

Junior center Sandra Dongmo contributed seven points and seven rebounds off the bench for Hofstra.

Hofstra erased a nine-point halftime deficit by going on a 15-0 run to start the third quarter. The Pride forced the Tribe to miss its first nine field goal attempts in the period and prompted William & Mary to call timeout when Loftus' jumper put Hofstra ahead, 32-30, for the team's first lead since the opening quarter.

The Pride shut out William & Mary for 5:40 into the third and out-scored the Tribe, 27-6-, in the quarter. The Pride went on a separate 8-0 run to go ahead, 46-34 to provide a cushion entering the final quarter.  In all, Hofstra shot 8-for-12 from the field in the third and held the Tribe to 3-of-16 shooting (18.8 percent) in the period.

William & Mary moved within 50-45 on Marlena Tremba's jumper late in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Asia Jackson responded with a three-pointer before the Tribe answered right back with a layup.

White re-established a three-possession lead by drawing a foul on the offensive rebound and hitting one of two free throws for a 54-47 with 4:02 left.

Hofstra forced a defensive stop and White grabbed a key rebound. That set up the Pride's next possession when senior guard Darius Faulk drew a foul and hit the second free throw for a 55-49 lead.

Faulk then completed a coast-to-coast lay up for a 57-49 lead inside of two minutes. William & Mary scored to make it a six-point game and called timeout. The teams then exchanged defensive stops, though William & Mary used a full-court press to generate a steal and Jenna Green made two free throws 57-53 at the 30-second mark. That would  be as close as the Tribe would get as Hofstra closed out the victory.

Masaquel scored 14 first-half points to stake the Tribe to a 30-21 halftime edge. Brooke Stewart, who was one of 11 William & Mary players to see action in the opening half, hit a three-pointer and Green scored off a pump fake. A free throw extended the Tribe's second-quarter ending run to 6-0 to help the Tribe take the nine-point lead into the locker room.

Durant scored Hofstra's first six points, contributing more than half of her team's output in a 11-all tie after the first quarter. Durant scored 10 in the opening half and Dongmo added seven points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench as the duo accounted for all but four of Hofstra's first-half points.

Hofstra wore pink uniforms for the second time this season as part of a cancer awareness initiative and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The Pride improved to 27-9-1 in the all-time series against William & Mary and has won four consecutive games in the series. Hofstra has won 14 of the last 15 in the series.

Hofstra will cap a three-game road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. against first-place and defending-CAA champion James Madison at the Convocation Center. The game will be televised locally on SNY in a game produced by the American Sports Network.
