Juan'ya Green scored 20 points and in the process became the 32nd member of the 1,000-Point Club at Hofstra in the Pride's 98-95 overtime loss to James Madison on Sunday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.
Hofstra falls to 16-8 and 8-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play with loss, while James Madison improved to 18-7 and 8-4 in league play.
Green becomes only the fourth player to ever score at least 1,000 points at two different NCAA Division I schools. He tallied 1,131 at Niagara from 2011-13 and has scored 1,010 during his Hofstra career which began in 2014.
Junior guard
Brian Bernardi led Hofstra with 22 points, while the Pride got double-doubles out of graduate forward
Denton Koon (19 points, 13 rebounds), sophomore center
Rokas Gustys (13 points, 18 rebounds) and senior forward
Ameen Tanksley (19 points, 10 rebounds).
JMU was led by Ron Curry's 31 points and Yohanny Dalembert's 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Hofstra would find itself in a six-point hole, 26-20, with 8:51 left in the opening half following a JMU basket before beginning to mount a strong run heading into the break.
Two free throws from Tanksley, who scored 12 first half points, would start a 14-2 Hofstra run that culminated with two more free throws from Tanksley at the 5:10 mark and gave Hofstra a 34-28 advantage.
In total Hofstra would score 22 of the final 28 points of the first half to push the lead to 12 points, 46-34. The Pride was helped by solid outside shooting as Hofstra hit nine three-pointers in the first half and in the waning minutes of the opening half were assisted by three-pointers from Green, Tanksley and Koon to help the lead to move to double digits.
James Madison would storm out of the gates in the second half and used a 20-4 run to take a 54-50 lead on a three-pointer from Jackson Kent at the 14:27 mark. Hofstra grabbed some of the momentum back, though, as Bernardi scored three points during a quick 5-0 run that made it 55-54 in favor of the Pride with 12:36 left in regulation.
Hofstra held a narrow one-point lead, 62-61, with 10:32 left before pushing the lead to nine at the 8:54 mark following a basket from Gustys.
A lay-up from Bernardi at the 6:16 mark would push Hofstra's lead back to double digits at 76-66 before James Madison used a late rally to send the game to overtime. The Dukes trailed by nine, 81-72, with 3:34 left in regulation before outscoring the Pride, 10-1, to send the contest to overtime. A three-pointer from Curry off an offensive rebound would knot the game at 82 with 16 seconds left.
The Dukes took an early six-point lead in the extra session before Hofstra battled back and a three-pointer from Koon made it 97-95 in favor of JMU with 12 seconds left. After James Madison went 1-2 from the free throw line with nine seconds to play, Hofstra had one last opportunity but a three-pointer from Koon was off the mark and JMU earned the win.
Hofstra is back in action on Thursday when it travels to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. contest.
NOTES- Hofstra leads the all-time series with James Madison, 15-11. The Dukes won both regular season meetings this year in overtime.
