MBB: Duo Of Gustys And Green Lead Hofstra To Important Road Win

Williamsburg, VA – Sophomore center Rokas Gustys had game-highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds, while senior guard Juan'ya Green tallied 13 points and a game-high 12 assists to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a huge 86-80 road victory over William & Mary on Thursday evening at Kaplan Arena.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 17-8 overall and 9-4 in Colonial Athletic Association. William & Mary falls to 17-7 and 9-4 in league play. The win also gives Hofstra the season sweep of the Tribe.

Hofstra dug itself an early hole as the Pride fell behind 9-0 to start the game. Hofstra answered with six of the next seven points in the contest to close to within 10-6 at the 14:18 mark on a layup from graduate forward Denton Koon

Two free throws from Terry Tarpey would push the Tribe lead back to eight, 18-10, midway through the first stanza before Hofstra used a 16-6 run to take its first lead of the contest at 26-24 following a jumper from Green with 6:10 left before intermission.

William & Mary would take a three-point lead with a minute to go in the half before junior guard Brian Bernardi, who scored 13 first half points, drained his third three-pointer of the stanza with seven ticks remaining to knot the game at 38 to end the first 20 minutes.

The game would be tied at 48 with 15:10 left in regulation before Hofstra got a three-pointer from Koon followed by a bucket from Gustys to open up a 53-48 advantage almost a minute later.

Hofstra would hold a narrow one-point lead with less than 12 minutes remaining before gradually expanding its advantage and using a 22-10 run over the next five-plus minutes to make it a 79-66 with 6:38 left.

William & Mary had a run left in them and the Tribe scored eight straight points to close to within 81-78 with under two minutes showing on the clock.

The Pride would end any thoughts of a Tribe comeback, though, as Hofstra hit five free throws in the final 1:26 to seal the road victory.

Senior forward Ameen Tanksley added 18 points, while Koon and Bernardi each finished with 13.

Omar Prewitt had 25 points to lead William & Mary. David Cohn had 13 points and five assists for the Tribe, while Tarpey chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Delaware for a 5 p.m. game. That contest will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
