WBB: Durant Scores 20 In Hofstra Loss To James Madison

Hempstead, NY - James Madison used a 7-0 run late in the third period to break open a close game and outscored Hofstra, 15-7, in the fourth to post a 71-54 win over Hofstra Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win gave the Dukes sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Ashunae Durant and Kelly Loftus led the Pride offensively with 20 and 11 points, respectively.

The Pride slipped to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the CAA. James Madison won for the eighth consecutive game to improve to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in league play.

The teams played a fairly evenly-matched first period that featured six lead changes and one tie score. The Pride led 9-6 following two free throws from Loftus with 6:12 remaining. But JMU's Hailee Barron ignited an 8-0 run for the Dukes with a three-pointer and Angela Mickens scored the next five points for a 14-9 JMU lead with 4:42 to go. The Dukes would lead by as many as seven, 22-15, before Durant cut the deficit to five with a layup with 51 ticks on the clock.

Durant opened the second period with a three-point play that brought the Pride within two, 22-20. Anjie White would tie the score at 22 with a jumper off glass with 8:54 remaining. With the score tied at 26, the Dukes made another run, scoring six straight points to take a 32-26 lead with 4:58 to go on a jumper from Mickens. The teams hit a lull offensively as neither team would score Jakelle King-Gilchrist's layup for Hofstra with 2:11 to go. The Pride would score the final four points of the period and go into halftime down two, 34-32.

Hofstra would cut the deficit to one on two occasions before the midway point of the third period, but the Dukes had an answer each time. After a three-pointer from Loftus made the score 39-38, Jazmon Gwathmey drained a three on the other end on JMU's next possession; and when a three-point play from Durant made it 42-41, Mickens hit a jumper for the Dukes on their ensuing trip down the floor. That started a 7-0 run for the Dukes as they took a 49-41 lead with 3:08 to play on another three-pointer from Gwathmey, the preseason CAA Player of the Year. Hofstra would get the lead down to five on two occasions but the Dukes scored the final four points of the period to take their then-largest lead of the game, 56-47, after 30 minutes of action.

The Dukes outscored the Pride, 7-2, over the first 3:17 of the fourth period to open up a 14-point advantage, 63-49, on Gwathmey's third three-pointer of the night. Her fourth three-pointer gave the Dukes a 69-52 lead with 2:40 play.

Gwathmey finished with a career-high 34 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Mickens scored 20 points to match her career-best and also added eight assists.

White led Hofstra with eight rebounds and also had seven points. Krystal Luciano had eight points and five assists.
