MBB: Hofstra Edged By UNCW In CAA First Place Matchup

Hempstead, NY - In a game that pitted the two teams tied for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association, UNCW rallied in the second half and used a three-pointer from Denzel Ingram with four seconds to play to snap a 67-67 tie for a 70-67 win over Hofstra Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Senior guard Juan'ya Green had tied the score for the Pride at 67 with a three-pointer of his own after UNCW erased an 18-point second half deficit. Green finished with a team-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds and five assists.

UNCW improved to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the CAA on the year with their eighth consecutive victory. Hofstra saw its four-game win streak snapped and slipped to 16-7 overall and 8-3 in league play.

Hofstra came out of the gates inspired, building a 20-6 lead 9:39 into the contest after freshman guard Desure Buie sank two free throws. That capped of a 15-2 run that featured five points from junior guard Brian Bernardi. The Hofstra lead would grow to as many as 18 following a three-point play from sophomore forward Andre Walker with 7:34 remaining in the opening stanza. Hofstra took its largest lead of the half, 38-18, with 2:24 to play as senior forward Ameen Tanksley drained a corner three-pointer off a great pass from sophomore forward Rokas Gustys. The Seahawks would score the final eight points of the half as Hofstra took a 12-point lead, 38-26, into intermission.

The Pride started the second half strong, scoring eight of the first 10 points to take a 46-28 lead on Tanksley's jumper with 17:58 to play. From that point, the Seahawks would mount a furious rally and use a 24-10 run to pull within four, 56-52, with 7:50 to play on a tip-in from Craig Ponder. The Pride converted five of six free throws over the next 1:30 to go back up by seven, 61-54, before UNCW went on a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the game, 63-62, on a layup from C.J. Bryce with 3:18 to play. Bryce had six of UNCW's points in the run. A jumper from Ingram extended the run to 11-1 and the lead to 65-62 with 2:34 remaining.

The Pride got a free throw from Bernardi to cut the lead to two, but Ponder hit a layup in traffic to give the Seahawks a 67-63 lead with 1:22 on the clock. After a free throw from Green cut made it a three-point game, the Pride forced a steal and Green drained a step-back three-pointer from the corner to tie the score with 20 seconds to go. But Ingram provided the heroics for the Seahawks in the final seconds and Hofstra's bid to tie the score at the final horn was off the mark.

Tanksley joined Green in double-figures with 13 points. Gustys saw his double-double streak snapped at eight as he tallied nine points and a career-high 21 rebounds.
