WBB: Seniors Help Hofstra Down Charleston

Hempstead, NY - Seniors Darius Faulk, Anjie White and Jakelle King-Gilchrist made their final appearance at home a memorable one as the trio combined for 40 points in leading the Pride to a 66-54 victory over Charleston Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride withstood a late comeback attempt by the Cougars to earn the win.

Hofstra improved to 21-7 overall and 12-5 in the CAA with one game remaining in the regular season. Charleston fell to 9-18 overall and 4-12 in the CAA.

Faulk finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. She also dished out six assists and had five steals. White had 14 points and added four rebounds and two blocks. King-Gilchrist posted 14 points and five rebounds in the game. Junior guard Krystal Luciano added 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Ashunae Durant posted 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Hofstra jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 1:12 on a three-pointer from Luciano and a layup from Durant. The Pride would go up by eight, 12-4, with 6:19 to go in the first period as King-Gilchrist hit a three-pointer and then had a steal and layup for the personal 5-0 run. A layup from Sandra Dongmo and a jumper from Durant extended the run to 9-0 and put the Pride ahead, 16-4, with 3:15 to play. The Cougars would score back-to-back baskets, but King-Gilchrist drained another three to give the Pride a 19-8 lead after one period of play.

Hofstra looked to put the game away in the second period, building a 25-8 lead with 6:46 to go in the half on a Luciano three-pointer. The Pride would keep the lead at 17, 29-12, with 4:34 to go on a layup from White, before Charleston began to chip away. The Cougars closed the period on a 13-5 run to get within nine at the break, 34-25. Shiclasia Brown and Nola Henry both had four points in the run.

Charleston opened the third period on a 7-4 spurt to get within six, 38-32, with 4:23 to go on Breanna Bolden's basket. Hofstra responded with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 12, 46-32, with 1:34 to play after a fast break basket from Faulk. After back-to-back baskets by the Cougars, Faulk beat the buzzer on a coast-to-coast drive to give the Pride a 48-36 lead going into the fourth period.

The Pride seemed to pull away in the fourth period, building an 18-point advantage (59-41) with 5:14 to play following another three-pointer from King-Gilchrist. The basket was her career-high fourth three-pointer of the game. But Charleston went on a 12-0 run and cut the lead to six points, 59-53, with 2:22 to go following a three-point play from Bolden. The junior guard scored 10 points in the run.

The Pride ended a scoreless drought of 3:04 when Faulk converted one of two free throws to give Hofstra a 60-53 lead with 1:53 to go. The Pride forced turnovers on each of Charleston's next two possessions and limited the Cougars to just one free throw the rest of the way.
