WLAX: Hofstra Falls On Last-Minute Goal To Fairfield

Hempstead, N.Y. – Graduate attacker Lindsay Scott scored a career-high seven goals - matching the program's highest total in six years – but Fairfield's Julieanne Mascera scored the last of her three goals with 29 seconds left as Hofstra fell, 13-12 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Senior midfielder Becky Conto posted a hat trick and junior Tiana Parrella notched four assists to double her previous game high. But Hofstra fell to 0-3 as Fairfield's Colleen Reynolds scored two goals apiece in both the first and second halves to lift the Stags to 3-2.

Scott scored five goals in the opening half and two in the second to set a career high. She was the first Hofstra player to post a seven-goal game since Corrine Gandolfi reached that mark vs. Oregon on March 22, 2010. Her effort was the first time a Hofstra player even reached six goals since Jill Maier versus Denver on Feb. 25, 2011.

Hofstra erased a 12-10 deficit in the final five minutes to knot the score late. Scott capitalized on a free-position opportunity with 3:45 left on the clock. Conto and Parrella then teamed up on the game-tying goal a minute later. Parrella, who had recorded two assists in a game on three separate occasions, then picked up her fourth helper of the game when she loafted a high-arching pass that Contro snagged before firing a quick shot before Fairfield goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras could slide back into position.

Mascera, who finished with three goals, then scored the game-winner in the last minute when the Stags were awarded a free-position shot. Mascera's 11th goal of the season proved to be the game-winner with Fairfield winning the subsequent draw control to prevent Hofstra from potentially trying for the equalizer.

Parella set up Scott twice for goals and teamed up with Conto and sophomore midfielder Drew Shapiro for her other goals.

The teams were tied at 9 with just less than 15 minutes to play before Reynolds scored back-to-back goals for an 11-9 Fairfield edge. Parrella gave Hofstra momentum back when her behind-the-cage pass hit Scott for a one-timer that brought Hofstra within one. The Pride eventually tied it on Conto's third goal of the season before Fairfield pulled away.

The Pride posted the game's first three shots-on-goal. But Fairfield went up, 4-1, as Reynolds and Alex Fehmel each scored two goals.

Scott sparked Hofstra's comeback bid by notching her third hat trick this season in less than 20 minutes. The former North Carolina product tied the score 11:58 into the game on unassisted marker and then scored two goals in a 19-second span to bring Hofstra within 4-3 with 11:26 left in the opening half.

Scott, whose first three goals were unassisted, again made it a one-goal game when she followed Fairfield's Kelly Camardo's scoring strike with 3:44 left. Conto and Fairfield's Riley Hellstein traded goals in the final two minutes before Scott knotted the score with 38 seconds left after converting Parrella's feed for her fifth goal of the opening half for a 6-all tie entering halftime.

Hofstra will now embark on a three-game road trip starting on Saturday, March 5 at Maryland at noon.
