WBB: Faulk, Leon Post Career Highs In Hofstra Win

Hempstead, NY - Senior guard Darius Faulk celebrated her 22nd birthday in style by scoring a career-high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals as Hofstra downed UNCW, 62-38, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra dominated play in the second half, outscoring the Seahawks, 34-18, after intermission.

Sophomore Aleana Leon had a career-high 10 points and six rebounds, and junior forward Anjie White added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pride.

Hofstra improved to 19-6 overall and 10-4 in the CAA with the win. UNCW suffered its third consecutive loss and fell to 7-18 overall and 3-11 in league play.

Hofstra led 19-11 after the first period behind nine points from Faulk. The senior guard scored the final four points in the period to give the Pride their largest lead of the stanza. Hofstra shot 39 percent in the period but had 15 rebounds including nine offensive boards. Hofstra did most of its damage close to the basket, outscoring the Seahawks 14-0 in the paint.

The teams played a low-scoring second period with each team collecting nine points as the Pride took a 28-20 lead into halftime. Hofstra went up by 10, 21-11, following a basket from White. But the Seahawks cut the deficit in half with a 5-0 run before Faulk put the Pride back up by seven with a layup with 5:30 to play. UNCW got within five again, 25-20 with 1:42 on the clock. But Faulk once again came up with a basket, this one a three-pointer, to give the Pride a 28-20 edge with 1:23 to go and neither team would score the rest of the way.

Hofstra would open the game up in the third period, outscoring the Seahawks, 16-5, to take a 44-25 lead after 30 minutes of action. The Pride closed the period on a 6-0 run over the final 2:26 and held UNCW scoreless for the final 4:39. Leon scored 10 of Hofstra's 16 points in the period including six of the final eight.

The Pride coasted in the fourth period as Faulk scored 12 of her points in the period. Hofstra led by as much as 27, 62-35, before three free throws from UNCW's Jasmine Steele closed out the scoring.

Steele was the only Seahawk in double-figures with 14 points. Jordan Henry tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds.

Junior center Sandra Dongmo had 11 rebounds for the Pride.

Hofstra is back in action Sunday afternoon when it takes on Delaware. Tip-off in Newark, Delaware, is slated for 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra dominated in the paint, scoring 44 points to UNCW's 12. Hofstra also had a 48-29 rebounding advantage

-The 38 points allowed was the second-fewest scored against the Pride this season (36 by Buffalo)

-All eight Pride players who logged minutes scored

-Hofstra has won seven of the last eight meetings with UNCW and is now 17-13 all-time versus UNCW
