WBB: Hofstra’s Comeback Bid Falls Just Short In CAA Loss At Delaware

Newark, Del. – Hofstra erased a 20-point second-half deficit, but Delaware's Erika Brown scored five straight points to put the Blue Hens up for good as Hofstra's overall comeback bid fell just short in a 54-47 Colonial Athletic Association defeat on Sunday afternoon from the Bob Carpenter Center.

Five Hofstra players scored at least eight points, including sophomore forward Ashunae Durant's eight points and 10 rebounds. Hofstra out-scored the Blue Hens, 31-18, in the second half, though Brown scored six of her eight total points in the fourth quarter. Courtni Green scored a game-high 19 points for the Blue Hens.

Hofstra lost for just the fourth time in the last 13 games to drop to 19-7 and 10-5 in CAA play. Four of those five conference defeats have come on the road. Delaware won for the third time in four games to improve to 14-12 and 9-6.

The Pride still needs just one more victory to post back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in the Division I era. Hofstra lost to Delaware for the first time in three games.

Durant's turnaround lay-in with 6:17 left tied the score at 43 after Hofstra trailed by 36-16 at the half. But Brown's two free throws and coast-to-coast layup off her own defensive rebounds gave the Blue Hens a 48-43 lead with 3:56 left.

Senior guard Darius Faulk's layup brought Hofstra to 48-47 with 1:33 left before Green buried the last of her five three-pointers with 58 seconds left for a four-point Delaware lead. Green made two free throws with 26 seconds left to help Delaware end the game on a 6-0 run.

Junior guard Krystal Luciano scored all 10 of her points in the second half for the Pride. Junior forward Sandra Dongmo grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench for Hofstra, though Delaware's bench registered a 17-2 scoring advantage.

The Blue Hens went ahead by 20 at the half by shooting 51.9 percent (14-for-27) and knocking down 5-of-10 three-pointers. Green added nine points in 17 minutes and Delaware's reserves scored 17 points in the first 20 minutes to help the Blue Hens post the double-digit lead.

Delaware ended the first quarter on an 11-0 run that saw Hannah Jardine drill a left-corner three-pointer and Nicole Enabosi make two layups to propel the Blue Hens to a 21-10 edge after the opening period. Delaware made 53.3 percent of its field goal attempts (8-for-15) in the quarter.

The Blue Hens sustained the pressure, posting a separate 10-0 run near the end the quarter and take a 20-point lead. Hannah Friend's buzzer-beating three-pointer sent the Blue Hens into the locker room ahead, 36-16.

Hofstra responded by going on a 7-0 run coming out of halftime. The Blue Hens slowed down the offense and started winding down the shot clock, though Hofstra kept the pressure up and Luciano's left-wing three-pointer brought Hofstra within single digits at 38-31. Green's left-corner three-pointer allowed Delaware to answer right back.

Luciano's second three-pointer of the quarter made it 42-36. Delaware would hit a free throw to take a 43-36 lead into the last quarter, though the Pride held a 20-7 point advantage in the third and forced Delaware to miss 11-of-13 field goal attempts to make a comeback bid.

Sophomore guard Aleana Leon made her first career start and scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds.

Hofstra will play its final two scheduled games at the Mack Sports Complex when the Pride hosts Drexel on Friday at 7 p.m. in a game that could have major implications for seeding. The Pride will then host Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. in a Senior Day matchup before capping the regular season at Northeastern on March 2.
