MBB: Late Basket Lifts Hofstra Past Towson

Hempstead, NY - Rokas Gustys scored off a pass from Juan'ya Green with 2.7 seconds to play to snap an 82-82 tie as Hofstra edged Towson, 84-82, Thursday night in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The win was Hofstra's third consecutive and improved its record to 19-8 overall and 11-4 in league play. Towson slipped to 18-10 overall and 9-6 in the CAA.
Gustys and Green each finished with double-doubles. Gustys notched his 16th of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The 16 double-doubles is a team record in the CAA era (since 2001-02), breaking a tie with Kenny Adeleke, who had 15 in 2002-03. Green, who picked up his seventh of the season with the assist on the final play, had a game-high 21 points and 10 assists.

The teams were tied at 43 at intermission. With the score tied at nine, Towson used a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead with 15:31 to play. The Tigers lead would grow to seven, 21-14, with 11:08 to go on William Adala Moto's jumper. The Pride responded with a 13-5 run to take a 27-26 lead on Denton Koon's layup with 6:55 remaining. The Pride went up by five before the Tigers came back and took a three-point lead with 2:33 to play. Hofstra used a 5-0 run with a three-pointer from Brian Bernardi and a dunk from Andre Walker to go up 41-39 with 1:34 to play. The teams traded the lead over the next 30 seconds before Towson's Jordan McNeil tied the score at 43 with a free throw with 38 seconds to play.

The second half was more of the same as Towson went up by four, 49-45, with 17:37 to play before the Pride used a 5-1 run to tie the score at 50 on a dunk by Gustys with 16:47 to play. The teams practically traded baskets for the next six minutes with neither side taking a definitive lead. Hofstra went up by four with 10:20 to go on a three-pointer from Bernardi, but the Tigers answered on their next possession with a three of their own from McNeil and then took a 67-66 lead on a steal and layup by McNeil. Trailing 69-68, the Pride scored six unanswered points to take a 74-69 lead with 6:35 to go on a three-pointer from Ameen Tanksley. Hofstra would extend the lead to eight, 79-71, with just over four minutes to go on a three-pointer from Bernardi.

Towson would not go quietly as the Tigers scored nine straight points to take an 80-79 lead with 1:44 on the clock. But Green converted a three-point play on Hofstra's next trip down the floor to put the Pride back up, 82-80 with 1:24 remaining. Towson knotted the game at 82 on a pair of free throws and forced a turnover on Hofstra's next possession. Bernardi drew an offensive foul on Towson's next trip to set up Hofstra's winning possession. Towson did have a three-point shot at the buzzer that did hit the rim.

In addition to Gustys and Green, Tanksley had 20 points and Bernardi added 12 points.

Towson placed five players in double-figures led by Adala Moto's 20 points and seven rebounds. John Davis added 17 points, while Mike Morsell chipped in 13 points and eight assists.

The game served as Hofstra's "Coaches Powering Forward for Autism" event as the program raises awareness for autism. Towson Coach Pat Skerry is one of the leading advocates for autism awareness among college coaches. Hofstra Coach Joe Mihalich personally purchased tickets for the following groups to attend the game: Connor and Friends, RVC Hoops For All, Backyard Players and Friends, BCCS-CRP and Piece by Piece Bethpage.

Hofstra is back in action at home Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. versus Northeastern in a game that will be televised by the NBC Sports Network.
