WBB: Hofstra Caps Road Trip With Loss At JMU

Harrisonburg, Va. –  Junior forward Anjie White posted 10 points and nine rebounds and sophomore forward Ashunae Durant tallied 11 points, but James Madison's Jazmom Gwathmey's game-high 20 points paced the Dukes as Hofstra lost, 57-42, on Sunday afternoon from the Convocation Center.

White finished just shy of notching her third consecutive double-double and Durant scored in double figures for a team-high 14th time. JMU's Angela Mickens complemented Gwathmey's output by scoring 17 points with five rebounds and five assists. Kayla Cooper-Williams racked up 16 rebounds for the Dukes.

Hofstra saw its two-game winning streak snapped in falling to 18-6 and 9-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play. JMU, the defending league champions, improved to 18-5 and 11-1. The Pride has still won eight of the last 11 and capped a three-game road trip 2-1.

Senior guard Darius Faulk scored four points, added four rebounds and posted three assists for the Pride.

Hofstra, which trailed as much as 14 in the first half, closed within 29-26 early in the third quarter on junior guard Krystal Luciano's three-pointer. That was Hofstra's first made three-pointer in the team's first 13 attempts. Senior guard Asia Jackson hit a three to make it 34-29 before Gwathmey's jumper helped JMU answer right back.

Faulk's turnaround jumper made it 39-35. Gwathmey drew a foul on JMU's final possession of the quarter and hit the first free throw before Faulk raced down and beat the clock on a driving layup to put Hofstra within 40-37 entering the final quarter.

Gwathmey's jumper on JMU's first possession of the fourth made it a two-score game. Mickens, who scored – fourth-quarter points, hit a jumper with 6:11 left and the Dukes called timeout up 46-39.

Da'Lishia Griffin's left-wing three-pointer gave JMU a cushion in going up 49-40. The Dukes then forced a steal and Gwathmey's put-back layup gave the Dukes an 11-point lead with 3:01 left to secure the regular season sweep.

JMU held a 10-0 advantage in blocks, led by Cooper-Williams' five.

The teams played tight perimeter defense, with Hofstra holding JMU to just 3-for-16 shooting from beyond the arc and the Dukes holding the Pride to 2-for-18 shooting.
Hofstra will return home to face UNCW on Friday at 7 p.m. The Pride is 9-1 at the Mack Sports Complex this season.
