WLAX: Hofstra Falls In Season Opener

Durham, NH – Graduate attacker Lindsay Scott posted four points on three goals and one assist to lead the Pride, but the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped its season opener to New Hampshire, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon at Cowell Stadium.

The game was the season opener for both squads with Hofstra falling to 0-1 and the Wildcats starting the year with a 1-0 record.

It marked the fourth straight season that Hofstra and New Hampshire have faced each other in the season opener.

New Hampshire jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Scott got the Pride on the scoreboard for the first time in 2016 with an unassisted goal 9:41 into the contest.

A free-position goal from senior midfielder Lindsey Alfano with less than five minutes left before halftime would make it a three-goal game at 6-3, but the Wildcats pushed the lead to four games as they tallied a goal with five seconds left in the opening stanza.

Hofstra would close the gap to three, 8-5, just 3:30 into the second half as freshman attacker Lexi Lenaghan and sophomore midfielder Drew Shapiro each found the net for the first time this season.

That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as UNH scored three times over a four-minute stretch to take a commanding 11-5 advantage.

Scott finished off her hat trick with 11:31 left in the contest as junior attacker Tiana Parrella fed her for her third tally of the afternoon.

Shapiro posted a game-high five draw controls for Hofstra, while senior midfielder Becky Conto added three. Alfano tallied two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the contest. Parrella had a goal and two assists as well.

Junior goalie Alexis Greene made five saves for Hofstra, while Kate Clancy had eight for the Wildcats.

Krissy Schafer led New Hampshire with three goals, while Nicole Grote, Laura McHoul and Rebecca Sennott each had two goals and an assist.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Harvard at 12 p.m.
