Buffalo, N.Y. – Hofstra Women's Basketball struggled to get past Buffalo's stingy defense, as the Bulls stayed undefeated, beating the Pride, 74-50, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Hofstra dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
Senior
Krystal Luciano finished with 13 points for the Pride, while freshman
Marianne Kalin posted 10 points for her first career double-digit performance, including six points in the evenly-matched first half. Junior
Ashunae Durant pulled down 11 rebounds, but was held to just four points, her first game this season not in double-digit scoring.
Three players finished in double-digits for Buffalo, led by Stephanie Reid and JoAnna Smith with 16 each as the Bulls managed to pull away in the second half.
The Bulls (7-0) got on the board first, but the teams traded baskets for much of the first quarter, with Buffalo leading, 9-6, at the 4:06 mark. Junior
Ashunae Durant found freshman
Marianne Kalin under the basket, and Kalin made her layup just before the shot clock expired to knot the score at 11 with about two minutes left in the quarter.
With the Bulls up, 17-15, early in the second quarter, senior
Krystal Luciano knocked down a three-pointer from the right side to give Hofstra the lead. After Buffalo had regained the advantage, junior
Olivia Askin hit a trey from the outside to put the Pride up, 21-19, midway through the frame. The Bulls used the rest of the quarter to stake a 32-25 lead at the half.
Freshman
Sandra Karsten snapped a field-goal drought for Hofstra, knocking down a right-corner three to cut the Pride's deficit to 47-36 with just under two minutes left in the third quarter. A layup from senior
Sydni Epps then trimmed the difference to nine, with Buffalo taking a 47-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Karsten hit a jumper early in the fourth to cut the deficit to seven, but the Bulls answered right away with a layup at the other end. Luciano hit a three to bring it to 51-43, but Buffalo would use the rest of the quarter to continue to pull away for the final 74-50 score.
The Pride returns home for a pair next week, hosting Massachusetts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and American at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
